  • Any Porsche Owners or Mechanics on This board?

This is a long read...so bear with me....

I know its a long shot but thought I'd see about you fellows out here. I also know I'm likely to get flamed hard on this one, but here goes.

I have ALWAYS liked the looks of the older 911's....particularly the 964 and 992 era. Did a lot of reaserch on them many years ago at a time when I thought about selling off my older cars and my daily to get into one...well, that idea flew out the window back then when I came to my senses on the whole deal. However, more recently I've had some things change in my car situation, and I am again thinking about a 911. I've had the opportunity a couple times in the past but never did it, and starting to think now is the time if I am ever going to. Also recently drove one and really liked it!

Story on what is happening over here....I recently sold my daily 2010 F150 and around the same time stumbled across a near mint 95' F150 (one of the old good ones...XL with a 4.9/5-Spd)...came from an 84 yr old man who had just passed away...really nice shape with low miles and literally as new on the inside. So I have a truck to serve my needs pulling the boat, hauling crap, etc. Second big thing is that it looks like I am abandoning the Camaro project (I know, I know )....I have an offer and deal made on the car as a roller that I think is fair, and have also decided that I just don't have time to own another project car. I have the 6.0 built and most all of the stuff needed for it, and have decided that it will be going in my Chevelle instead (which will be painted and ready for assy. this fall)....I am finally committing 100% of my focus to finishing that car! I also still have the yellow truck to play around with as a bum around old driver. Point being....I have a truck that can serve my needs and also do daily duty when needed.....and I also have my old car itch covered.

However, I have been looking hard at what I want to be my nice weather daily car....something cool and unique to share daily duty with the old F150. I strongly considered a 2011 or 2012 GT....I like them, but still afraid I'm going to get bored with one after a short time. Also thinking about resale...in a couple/few years just going to be another used 5.0 in a sea of them (no offense to new 5.0 owners). I also thought about a Shelby or maybe even a new Boss...but they are just more than I want to spend (I am looking at something for cash at ~$25K). Thought about a terminator too...but just not really feeling it on those, and the nice ones are still stupid money IMO. Have thought on C6's too....still really like them, but still a little bit of a stretch with the cash amount I have.....I also HATE GM's practices with warranty and such, and pretty much hate that company overall due to some previous experiences, so its hard to bring myself there even tho I do like those cars....also a 2-seater isn't the best choice for my situation.

This brings me back to the 911's....have always been a pretty diehard American iron guy with the exception of a few European cars, and even though I despise the typically Porsche owners and their little gay clicks, I have always liked those cars....especially the clasic bug-eyed ones. With that said....what are some opinions from any of you guys that have owned them, had friends or family who have owned them....you guys thay maybe have worked on them, etc?

I'd like to have a 992, but they are starting to stretch on what Im comfortable paying cash for...I also really like the looks of the 964's as well as their reputation for dependability. However the later liquid cooled 996's seem to be really reasonable and a lot of car for the money....albeit maybe not the same feel as the classic air cooled models. I've also have to be careful with some known issues on the earlier 99-00 models of those.

Here's an example of one car that I have been talking to a guy about and thinking real serious on....it's a 90' C4S....never a daily since new, literally binders worth of records with it including a $17K engine job put back in with an Eaton supercharger....upgraded suspension, H&R springs, 3 sets of wheels/tires, etc. Super nice car...and I could get in it for probably $22K......

A respectible guy that owns this one....he has an overwhelming amount of documentation on the car including a picture documented build of the engine, trans, etc. Tons of upgrades on it too. With it's weight, AWD, and the power it is making he says it's a rocket. The down side is that it is in Denver....so I'm thinking about flying out there soon. I didn't really want an AWD but this one I think is going to be REALLY nice for the money. It's unique too with the way it's built....can't say that you see a lot of 964's on the road mcuh to begin with, and especially one with a SC snount sticking out in the back. Insurance is really reasonable on one of these too.

I haven't driven a 996 yet but think I should just b/c of the improved creature comforts, it being overall newer design, etc.

Corner carvers has all the tech you would ever want to know about them. This thread in particular has a ton of tech on used porsche and what to look out for.

Always liked those. I'm sure you already know, but parts cost on them is fucking RETARDED high. You should at least go the Hank Moody route and get a black drop top...

I can put you in touch with my parents' friend if you want, Jason. He's about to sell his '98 Carrera 4S if you're interested. He's had it since it was new, and it's pretty damn clean.

As someone who has owned many Porsche's and who has worked on them professionally I can tell you that the Germans designed them with out an expiration date. They also designed them to be maintained the same way you would maintain a small airplane and it will add up to big $$$ in short order. Most of the normal parts don't cost that much but every now and then you will get a hit with sticker shock for some completely necessary albeit iniquitous part.

I would avoid one that has an aftermarket supercharger unless it has had some serious work done to the engine management system. Most Porsche techs are technically challenged and will use really crude stuff that the mustang tuners stopped using 15+ years ago.

Damned straight! Seems about everything is crazy high on them....I think a Cabrio would be cool but they look funny to me with the top up...like a tent pitched on top. I just love the looks of the coupes.

Being a 98' I believe is going to make that an early prodiction 996.....or maybe a real late production 993?....if so I'm betting he is going to be out of my price range....but those are my absolute favorite body style (993). I'd really appreciate any additional info you could throw my way, Yale. You never know...maybe something I could swing.

This one had some huge mods done along with the conversion, and apparently no expense spared, but I'm still undeiced if I should look more at the 964 era cars or the 996 cars. OR....maybe save a little more and try to get into a 993.

I hear you on the maintenance plan too....seems they need some continual attention...however, everyone I know who owns (or has owned) one swears they are the addictive. Would you agree on that? What Era's did you own? ...and thanks for the info!

I want to say it's a super late production 993, like the last year. I'll get in touch with him, and get you his contact info.

Damn - I was about to offer you a dollar for the engine/electronics to go in my Chevelle before i read you're putting it into yours.

I realized last year that I'm at that point too. I have my truck, I need to finish my Chevelle, get rid of my Mustang. Then maybe pick up a nicer car to cruise when I don't feel like driving one of the other two.

Of course this week one of my friends came up and asked me if I wanted to buy his Bullitt. I'm thinking German touring car for my third vehicle..... But that's down the line quite a ways.

BTW - I've always seen the little pic of your Chevelle and wondered how long you've had it, what all you've done to it, etc?

Jason I bought my 91 targa this Febuary. I daily drive it and love it. Really good gas milage also but I drive 100 miles a day all highway. Most of the average maintance stuff is normal priced just like every other car. The only thing that ive had to buy that was high was one of the blower motors for the ac. It was $650 for that. If you have any questions or wanna drive mine around sometime just ask.

                    Heres mine

                    1997 viper gts
                    1986 turbo mustang
                    1987 Buick grand national

They are good to go as long as you know how to maintain it. Porsche people like to document everything.

The trans is decent the motor will last as long as its maintained. Body computers are known to fail. Watch for cracking in the fuel lines.

They are awesome cars, but its just a whole other scene. They are the last shade tree mechanic porsches. You can fix these cars yourself. Parts are not that bad. You can find a lot of used parts in good shape cheap.

                        90' 964, 97' 993, 87 951, 88 951s are the good ones. I have had many others.

Even with high dollar builds I have seen them use a hobbs switch to turn on some extra injectors or a 10:1 regulator on the return side of the fuel system for enrichment under boost. Don't touch that car unless it has a real engine management system or they were able to re-tune the factory one.

My dad has an 82 that he bought new. He loves it and has over 300K miles on it. He has maintained it meticulously. It isn't cheap to maintain though, I guess it's a good thing that he can afford to maintain it. I actually got to take it to prom, and he taught me to drive a stick in it. The car is great in the corners, and it's hard to beat the sound of the rear boxer engine. I would love to buy the car off of him, lol. Pretty much the only input that I have for you is that if you are going to get one, you need to be able to maintain it properly, and to do that it's going to be expensive if you don't do most of it yourself. But you can't beat the cars, there really is "no substitute". Good luck. My father actually just bought one that he got off of his buddy for cheap. Never daily driven, always garage kept. Right around 50K miles if I remember right. I think it's a 95 or right around that. But it's black and it is also a C4S. Let me know if you would like any more info on it and I can find it out for you.
