the difference in the meat puppets, melvins, and foo fighters is, the meat puppets are still making great music
Obviously it's been awhile since you've heard them. Their only "bad" album is Honky.
How do we forget ourselves? How do we forget our minds?

We'll have to agree to disagree. The minimalistic movement of 'alternative' rock was a refreshing change from the hair bands, but there are other guitarists from the alternative genre that are better labeled as 'amazing,' i.e. Mike McCready, Tom Morello, Jerry Cantrell.

I thought Nude with Boots was killer, but Bride Screamed Murder left a bit to be desired. But, aye, just opinions. Yours just isn't worth a fuck!

            No love for Dave Navarro?

I wanted to like nude with boots, I really did. The mixing was horrible, and the cd feels like it was thrown together. In fact I was so let down when hearing it, I havent seen them live since then. Before that, I didn't miss a show. I remember seeing the melvins when there were 50 people there, now tool pushes them so hard, the last show I went to was a bunch of kids who were fans of the melvins to be cool

It wasn't an inclusive list, but more of a back-up to my point that Kurt Cobain was little more than a whining, sniffling, bi-polar, gateway musician that did the world a favor in offing himself. He was one less 'artist' releasing mediocre music.

                • I dunno.. much like Metalica making "speed metal" popular with more than one genre Nirvana made grunge mainstream. IMO that takes talent.

Talent, more often than not, takes a backseat to ambition, being at the right place at the right time, and good marketing. As a whole, we were desperate for anything different at that time.

Meh, I don't think so. He built that gateway and lead the Seattle charge through it, completely changing music. Mediocre implies average, and it takes more than average to do it, even if he simply exploited being in the right place at the right time. People who are in the right place in the right time are rarely there by some unforeseen accident.

I get more enjoyment out of listening to my wife bitchin' than I do listening to her nails on a chalkboard voice.

I compare it to looking at a Warhol. By itself, it's minimalistic and innovative, and has it's place in pop culture, but if you were to hang it in the Sistine Chapel, it's mediocre in comparison to Michelangelo, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and Raphael's works.

I would agree marketing would be a key ingredient with most bands, however both of those bands were already a household name even if they were not listened to. When Smells Like Teen Spirit debuted on the radio it was extremely different yet anyone who liked rock music could relate. It's the same with the band Tool. Not sure if you are a fan, but their sound is very unique, much like Nirvana's sound was unique at the time. They have been around now for 20+ years and have fans of all ages. That's more than marketing IMO.

Jenn, I don't love you anymore. This just isn't working out.
