That's the problem....most people only know of the over played crap like Cry Baby, Piece of my Heart, Bobby Magee which were written by various others (Kris Kristopherson being one), but a lot of her earlier stuff was all hers....and pretty damned good too. Once she hit she sort of fell to the same fate that most of them do....record companies dictating the songs and also the band members....I'm seriously doubting Winehouse wrote most of her own stuff either. I think Cobain Did....but that's evidently why his music was so fuckin weird! LOL.

If you're calling an artist a hack just b/c they did't write all of their own songs then you'd be surprised how may others fall into that category.....The Stones, Jimi Hendirx, Elvis Presley, Three Dog Night,
Led Zepplin.....just to name a few of the big ones.

Not all. Most. And I called her a hack for two reasons, only one of which you incorrectly stated. Enough arguing though. You like her, I don't. We'll both get on with our lives.

Cobain and Nirvana put the final much needed coffin nail in the 80s hair bands and revolutionized modern popular alternative rock. You might not like him, but to say he lacked talent is retarded. Never could get into Joplin either, though I might give it another try since my ears have been refined since the last time I gave it a shot.

You are right. I'll rescind my statement....he did indeed have talent I'll agree, just not as a musician....and we all know there is a difference between musicians and composers. He does deserve credit for mounting a pioneering change in the music industry (much needed at the time).

I'll admit I used to jam out nevermind to "11" when I was 20-ish...my ear for truly good music just became more aware over the years I suppose.

                      ....fair enough?

Of course it is cliched now, but I still remember the very first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit. I wasn't into music yet(would become hugely into it once I got my first car.) Walking home from school, and at a gas station a young guy in a Wrangler with all the top and sides off had it cranked while he was filling up I thought it was the most awesome music I had ever heard. Hell, I flipped it on on itunes while I'm typing this, and it still rocks, even though they would later end up hating the song.

It was late 1990...I was 20 and drove a 85' Supra with a big ole system in it....huge box with two CV 12's pushed by an Orion 2150...."Come as you are" used to jam like crazy in that thing....and also the drums from "In Bloom".....I remember cranking the shit out of it out at the lake when it was brand new....like Labor Day weekend or something.

Probably partly responsible for my shortness of hearing now 20 years later.
