HURST - A man believed to have anti-government views is recovering from two gunshot wounds after a shoot-out with a Colleyville police officer Thursday morning.
Colleyville police said James M. Tesi, 48, refused to pull over for a traffic stop. Instead, investigators said, Tesi drove to his Hurst home in the 600 block of Bear Creek Drive about 10:50 a.m.
After pulling into his garage and getting out of his truck, Colleyville Police said, Tesi opened fire at its officer with a .45-caliber automatic handgun.
"Multiple shots were fired by both the officer and the subject," said David James, the interim chief of the Colleyville Police Department. "The officer was not injured."
But Tesi was struck in the face and foot.
The Colleyville officer, a 26-year veteran of the department, was not immediately named.
Tesi is being treated at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
"He was described as alert, talking to doctors and expected to recover," Chief James added.
Tesi is known to several police departments. He made news earlier this year after refusing to show his driver’s license to police during a traffic stop. Tesi argued that as a member of the Moorish National Republic, he doesn't have to abide by state and federal law.
Hurst police have now charged Tesi with attempted capital murder for the shootout.
Colleyville police said Tesi was wanted for several Class C Misdemeanor warrants including speeding, driving without license in possession, and failure to appear in court.
Chief James said Thursday’s incident was the first ever involving a Colleyville officer.
