  • NYC sucks!

So my grandmother is in the hospital up here in NYC and has been for the past month and a half or so.

I am needed up here by my mother and daughter because she (gma) has two serious issues and clamps on to life both times.

She is showing a 1000% improvement but me and my fiance are still up here needing to get back to Dallas for work.

Now mind you we are staying in a near million dollar home up here in Bronxville/Yonkers area and are 15 minutes from 165th and Ft Washington Ave in the big City but damn.. This place is WAY behind Texas in every way possible.

First, the service industry blows and if ANY of these folks worked in DFW in the field, they would be deep in the weeds. Absolutely terrible..

Second, every f-ing place has parking meters (even outside the city) and tolls.

third, gas is 440 a gallon for regular.

Fourth, they have no honey or Dollar Menu at McDonalds. (Fiance is prego and loves honey on her chicken nuggets)..

Fifth, cigs are 10 bucks a pack!

I'm sure there is more but I don't wanna think.. Just wanna come home.

PS I will NEVER IN MY LIFE BITCH ABOUT 635 TRAFFIC AGAIN.. GWB can suck it!

Rant off.. Go have a beer..

lol, wusses. It is expensive, but the few times I've stopped by there on business for a week at a time - you can find things at a decent price. Rule #1 in that city though is TAXI! Don't drive if you can avoid it. At least that's my opinion and I'm specifically talking about in the city.

          I hear that!

Before I brought my mothers car to her she was renting a car a 1k a week up here. Then we had to take the 2 hour trip to Newark Airport (which is only 32miles from us) to return it.. I recommended taxi but it would cost the same or more once you figure trains and as much commute as we do in to town for hospital.

Hell we even went as far (recently) to get an express pass/toll tag..

If you move from Dallas, TX to New York (Manhattan), NY....
            Groceries will cost: 60% more
            Housing will cost: 447% more

            Transportation will cost: 19% more
            Healthcare will cost: 25% more

            Food 99 129

Sheeeit. I've had a great time in NYC, but my agenda wasn't to watch my wallet, or be there for a sick relative. If you don't have to get anywhere in a hurry, NYC is great. Walking around is fun as hell, and riding the subway is the greatest because of the people watching. They could damn sure learn a thing or two from DC about how a subway should work. DC's metro is the fucking greatest.

Yale has a great point. Walking NYC is most of the fun IMO. In the DFW and other areas we base everything on how long it takes to drive there. When I'm in NYC, I generally take Taxis to/from airports or things much further away. Otherwise, I base my schedule on walking and it's nice to be able to do that.

I like the locals too, friendly but not overly so. Lots of police presence the last time I was there too.

One thing to remember is that some people pay more for a PARKING SPOT than others do for a house. Only mention that due to parking meters and such. City has a lot of historic value to it and lots to see. I'd hate it too though if I were there for a medical emergency type thing and was not able to relax.

I dont mind NYC, I go there to visit some of my wifes family every other year. We stay about a week each time, and that is long enough for me. I dont hate it, but there is no way in hell I would ever live there. And the subway is the only way to go.

Folks here are friendly.. Unless they are driving next to or behind you.

I love to walk down 165th to Wendy's to eat. Ran into a dude with a Busa that worked at the hospital and we chat every time I go out for a smoke. LOL I met him when he was in his scrubs firing up a blunt on the street bouncing the rev limiter on the bike.. I lol'd and joined him for a few minutes while he puffed a few and told me the fun things to do here. Later that hour I saw him up on the floor we are on cleaning.

One of my friends lived in Astoria for a few years and got used to the inflated drink prices, normal bar prices for beers were $5-6 and mixed drinks $7.50 and up. Spending $100+ a night for him and his girlfiend was normal. The first time he picked up a tab for the group here he tried to stress to the waitress that it was for the whole table, not just his.

$10 beer night is a reality in NYC!
