How are the XJ Jeeps as far as reliability/mpg?

Well I got the 5 inch lift on and trimmed the front fenders this weekend. Shes a beast now.
Also went from 16-17mpg.....to 12.5 FML

So you are claiming that you went from 12.5 MPG to 18 MPG by switching from 33" tires to 35"?

I've owned 3 of them. 96 2wd 4 cyl 5spd that got mid 20's that I bought new. Only had to put a water pump on after 150 k miles. 2001 2wd 6cyl auto got 20-21 with it also bought new Never had to do a thing to it. 1993 2wd 6 cyl auto that I bought with 200k on it. Got 19-20 in it and Only had to put a alternator on it in 30k miles. I would definitly get another one. All these were my wifes vehicles and she's got a lead foot.

If you think about it it is one of the better SUVs you can buy in terms of Mpg. I think that 22mpg is very repsectable out of a less than $5k suv.

I'm in total agreement on the reliability claim. However, I haven't had good experience on the fuel efficiency side of the argument, especially taking into account more gear and bigger tires. 22 is damn good. That's a keeper.

I know she is, after what I paid for it(less than 5k by a lot) I could replace the Jeep if I wanted to in good conscious. I will say that most Jeeps will see the same sort of fuel economy. For a stock Jeep to get worse than 20 highway something has to be wrong.

I worked on one a couple weeks ago, pretty easy to work on. It was a ragged out turd tho.

22-23 is gonna be about right for a 4x4 stock Cherokee. I am seeing 22 hwy on a lifted 2wd with 31" tires.

City driving kinda sucks though.

I've bought two of them for my daughter - a 2000 with 75k miles that my daughter totalled out after 90 days (the air bag worked just fine LOL....), and a 1999 with 145k miles to replace it. They both had issues with the front speaker wiring and the neutral safety switch (which can be taken apart and cleaned), and the 1999 had issues with the front door lock actuator. The rear main seals tend to leak as does the transmission. Parts are cheap and readily available on ebay, and the 6 cylinder is about as simple to work on as it gets. Jeep changed over to a distributorless ignition in 2000 which may be a plus.

I haven't paid attention to gas mileage but she sure seems to fill up all of the time.
