We stay at a small family owned resort on St. Thomas called Bolongo Bay Beach Resort. www.Bolongobay.com
It's on it's own private beach, has a dive shop on site, a formal-ish restaurant, and a laid back bar and grill down the walkway. We wouldn't stay anywhere else.

It really is, man. They treat us like family.

I will say that it is an older resort, hence the family owned part. However, that just means it has character. It is still very well kept, just don't go into it expecting The Ritz.

There was a couple there that we (I) would drink with that complained about their TV in the room because it wasn't a flat panel LCD yada yada yada... We didn't even turn our TV on while we were there. The wife of that couple said she turned it on once.

The "semi-formal" restaurant does require you to be fully clothed, but bare feet are acceptable. They serve you in a low noise atmosphere as compared to the bar at the other end of the beach. The bar that is located in front of the restaurant stays open until 11. It has a pool next to it as well. Yes, there is a swim up to order portion of the bar.

Iggie's is the bar and grill that was mentioned earlier. This is where you will likely find live music, excellent food choices, great people, and a very laid back environment. Shirts are required after 6pm.

If you do decide to go down there (St. Thomas), then you will need to know how to mingle with the locals.

If it is before 12 pm, then you begin with good morning. If it is after 12 pm then you say good afternoon. If the sun has gone down it's good evening.

They will respond with the same, then you ask how they're doing. Then you can begin whatever conversation you planned on having. This applies to everyone, even the Superior Court.

If you don't plan on a conversation, then simply say "good _______" in passing with a smile.

This goes a long way with showing them respect. They have been subjected to snooty tourists for a long damn time. Try not to let a shitty look get you down if you come across an angry islander that you need to talk to. They will quickly change their tune if you stick to the gameplan.

If you've seen said girls dressed in traditional west Indian garb and dancing in the streets during Carnival, it's pretty much a given that there are no virgins on the islands.
