  • Replacing the brakes on the TL...

So, we replaced the brakes on the TL (2007) a month and a half ago. It was squealing really bad so we took the advice to trade out the new pads for a different set and have the rotors turned. Put the new set on, still squealing every time we push the brake pedal-it's really, really bad.

So, I go to the dealership where I bought it to get a free tank of gas (sales referral) and am talking to my salesman about how much we love the car, but the brakes are driving me crazy. He looks at them (they are the fronts) and says we don't have the shims in and that's the problem.

Today, I've been googling info and have seen many people posting that you really should use the OEM brakes because all others will squeal. Here's my question for you highly experienced brake/Acura people:

    1) Are the shims the problem? Should I just buy shims and put them on with the brake pads we currently have? or...

    2) Should I get the OEM brake pads (which I assume come with shims) and take the others back?

If I need to get OEM pads, can anyone tell me the brand so I can try and find them cheaper than the stealership?

    TIA!

Either shims or disk brake quiet smeared or sprayed on the back of the pads. This goes for any disk brake car, its just that some are worse than others about the noise. The squeal is actually coming from the backside of the pad where it vibrates against the caliper piston.

If the pads have just been replaced, I would just try and find the shims. That's IF you can buy them separately from the pads.

I've use silicone before with good results. Basically glues the pad to the caliper. The noise is coming from the caliper.

Who let you out of the kitchen? Especially on a holiday weekend. I'm sure if the food is done cooking there is laundry to do.

It's something to do w/ the alloy the foreign manu's use in the rotors. My CR-V did it w/ Wagner Thermo Quiet's of an older formulation. Last Monday, I redid all the brakes using the newer TQ's and it no longer squeals.

The OE pads are really soft and tend to be very dusty. Try the new Wagner's and see if it goes away.
