Yeah if you go to Progresso, MX they talk about everyone sleeping in hammocks but they don't really tell you why. Drive down that 5 mile long pier and look at the rocks and you'll see exactly why. I bet there are 5 million rats along the road.

Being a huge camper and have never heard of that site, you peaked my interest! As someone else said, the Rats worry me a bit. I downloaded the camping pdf and spotted this section:

Protect your foodstuffs
Rats have inhabited the Tortugas probably since the arrival of humans. Though the size of the rat popula- tion is controlled, rats may be encountered as they forage through campsites looking for food. The only way to protect your food and prevent damage to your gear (rats will chew through tents and backpacks if they smell food) is to store your food in hard-sided containers or hang it from the posts provided.
