  • Anyone have a small vacuum pump and R12 guages they wanna loan out?

    OR SELL?

Going to help my brother in law rebuild the leaky A/C system on his 87 Chevy 3/4 ton truck. If I can find guages that work for R12 and R134 then I'm going to also rebuild the system on my 98 GMC Sierra which is not cooling like it used to.

How much is R12 going for these days?

My boss's car is still running that and he won't convert it to R134a. He doesn't think it 'll get cold enough after the conversion.

I've seen a few conversions done that worked good, but there are several R12 compatible refrigerants that work just as good that are MUCH cheaper than R12 that don't require replacement of all the components. R134a tends to leak in R12 systems that arent completely rebuilt due to the smaller molecules that leak by old seals. Freeze 12 is prolly the most common R12 replacement...I've used it since 93 in several cars and trucks I've owned and it worked just fine. I've done some reading and supposedly ES12 made by Envirosafe will get colder than R12 did with LESS freon required.

My dad has the guages I believe still and I have a pump that you hook to an air compressor and it pulls it down. I will call him in a bit and make sure. I will also be in RO friday. LOL For some reason when we did my Bronco we had an issue though so I need to confirm. I gotta do my Galaxie also but I think it needs one hose before I charge it.

Hell 134 has the guages built into the can but usless to make sure its holding a vacuum.

I am probably going to buy a real electric vacuum pump because when I did some reading about those venturi type pumps I was given the impression that they are incapable of pulling a significant evac on a system. I would certainly love to get the guages to use though...it would save a bit of money. I am planning to replace the compressor, all O-rings, the Orifice, and the accumulator and then pulling a DEEP vacuum to see if it holds (thats why I need the guages). If it holds then I will charge it up with Freeze12 (I just happen to have 3 cans).

AZ will rent you a vaccum pump.

I wouldn't use the gauges they might be contaminated, no telling what they've been through.

They're 134 gauges, but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to throw on conversion fittings to get the hoses on.

                    I may be wrong though.

WOW...just called AZ about renting one...299.99 for the rental..although I was told they would refund it completely including tax. Guage Conversion kits run anywhere from 40 to 60 bucks...in which case I can buy a set of dual guages for about 50 bucks. If my BIL is willing to split the costs I may just buy a set of dual guages for 50 bucks, then go buy a new vac. pump for about $100.

I highly recommend the lil extra money on one of these instead. I have two sets of gauges if you don't come up with anything! I have my IMACA certification but only work on my own cars when needed! lol

R134A is ridiculous now if you buy it in small cans, well over a $1 an ounce. I haven't priced R12 lately, pretty sure you have to buy it 30 pounds at a time.

Either refrigerant can blow 40 degree air out of the ducts, yeah R12 probably will blow colder at first and the life span is longer but if he's going from a car with no A/C do you think he'll really notice a 3-4 degree difference in output? Either is more than capable of freezing over an evaporator core.
