I just paid $172.50 to register a truck I paid $1,000 for. That's fair!!! In the state's defense now that it's fixed I can probably get $3,500 for it, and whomever buys it will get to pay that $172.50 again.

I don't think 17.25% tax is that fair.. I'm assuming your're being sarcastic

Exactly what I was thinking. Here I was on vacation from Afghanistan, just picked up and washed my 12yr old 1995 Cobra convertible with only 30,000 miles that I paid cash for and was enjoying a beautiful August morning with the top down. That bitch was not worth my time. I paid my $800 to Mrs. Price and left laughing about it.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

should have spent a few hours at the bank getting 80,000 pennies.

Yep! State law also says appraisers are supposed to charge a minimum of $100 for their services. http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinf...rms/14-128.pdf

That and "dealers" are exempt from the presumptive value tax. I need to either get a dealer license or start appraising cars (need to be a licensed insurance adjuster).

...and get charged with disturbing the peace? There are some boats I choose not to rock and some battles I choose not to fight. Fucking with the DPS is not on my list of stand up and slap a bitch. Besides I didn't know it at the time but my DL was suspended for those damn surcharges. I am lucky she did not run it and call the trooper over. This was in 2007 before the rule came out with unpaid surcharges resulted in not being able to register a vehicle.

Fuck now I have to change my damn screen name AGAIN!

You now that everyone acts right when they have some paper on them like an outstanding warrant or driving a vehicle that is not registered for example.

Dealers are excluded from presumptive value. If you buy from a registered dealer you pay tax on actual sale price- trade in.

If you buy from private you pay tax on whichever is higher: purchase price or 80% of presumed value.

Unless you get it appraised from a certified appraiser. In that case you pay tax on the appraised value.

Tax is 6.25% in all cases for road legal vehicles.

The cracker bitch even laughed when she told me how much and then asked "who pays that much for a car only worth $4,500-5,000?"
You let the seller write the sold price?

I bought from an Ohio seller while I was in Afghanistan and had the car shipped to Texas. Wasn't a whole lot I could do about that. I SHOULD have said "don't put purchase price on the back of the title", but I had not bought a car from a private seller in over 20 years. I know better for next time.

Only a douche bag would even do that.

Does a lawyer count? You should have seen the "contract" he drafted for the sale. Damn thing was 2 pages of 11-12 font Arial single spaced. I still have it somewhere.

Some people are just ignorant. I bought a motorcycle recently and when I pulled out the bill of sale he (I shit you not) asked what was this for.....
