The cams on the ryobi are composite/plastic and will go flat if you use them for extended periods of use cause they get hot. I don't know about other brands but I went though 2 4 strokes then went back to 2 strokes.

I had a 4 stoke Ryobi several years ago... worked/lasted good for a few years, then it started getting hard to start, and eventually wouldn't start at all... finally just bought a new two stroke Echo trimmer.
On the bright side, I was able to cannibilize the Ryobi carb and use the throttle cable swivel on one of my mini bike engines.
see that little swivel on the end of the cable? That's the only thing still working from that Ryobi trimmer...

Anyone have a recommendation for a gas-powered trimmer that is EASY to switch from weed-eating to edging? I've been using one of these for years and like how with the push of a button an twist, I can go from edging to weed-eating and back again:
...but I'm building a house on 3/4 acre and I think the electric powered is just not going to cut it (no pun intended). Most of the gas powered units seem like they would be a pain in the ass to edge with and the edging attachments aren't exactly quick and easy to swap out.
Thanks- Darrell

Stupid question - but will a gas weed-eater still run with it rotated 90 degrees? I had one years ago that would die if I did that. But, it was a piece of shit so maybe that was the reason?- Darrell

Only con is that they are a little heavy(er) but the good out weigh the bad. The Ryobi we had is a convertable and can accept multiple heads, small chainsaw, edger, bush trimmer and blower, all can be interchanged in a matter of minutes too.Originally posted by SilverbackLook all you want, she can't find anyone else who treats her as bad as I do, and I keep her self esteem so low, she wouldn't think twice about going anywhere else.

I have a four stroke weed wacker and when it breaks, I am going back to two stroke. It's too heavy to do a bigger yard like mine. It would be great if I didn't have to use for more than 15-20 minutes at a time but it looks like I won't have to use it at all this year. There is nothing bad I can say about them other than heavy, don't be an idiot like I was and buy the biggest one you can find.
