I hate being one... I will hover and observe/ask questions, but if I detect any sort of frustration/trouble-spot, I will walk away and return a voice mail i just got. I'll still observe from a distance, but I won't be in "over shoulder" mode
& another vote for this, observing is a ok but know the boundries. I cannot stand it when people invade personal space and get in the way. I am a checker throughout the process and I try to just make sure my final inspection is done before they leave just incase I have an issue.

I still hover. Not much, and i try to stay out of the way. Usually I'm trying to get a feeling of how well they know what they are doing. I usually start without giving them any indication I know anything about cars, and start a conversation if they are willing. Usually by the end, things go well. I have yet to have to take tools out of anyone's hands, but I've seen some that were at the point of needing it.

Some of us don't do everything because we don't have the place, tools, or help, but it doesn't mean we don't know anything about cars. I've been around shops my whole life and have taught even skilled mechanics every once in a while. I guess reading all those books, magazines, TSBs, etc was worth it.

Don't take all watchful eyes as trouble.
