  • Do you hover over someone working on your stuff

I tend to hover over people if they are working on my car or something at the house. Does anyone else? Sometimes, if it is something I know nothing about, I like to see what they are doing to understand it better. Am I being rude?

Does it bother you if the customer wants to talk to you about what you're doing or just wants to talk while you're doing your job?

I do the same thing. Years back, some asshat shot the dial to the safe in the store I was managing (S. Dallas - go figure). I had to have the safe drilled and was right up in their shit learning everything I could about it - asking questions and having a great time of it. Did the same thing to the guy who did the tint on my car.

I let them do their thing. I'm paying them for the knowledge so my curiosity gets the better of me sometimes. I definitely don't hover though.

And yes it is annoying if they hate their job lol.

I think you can tell if the person who's doing the work is ok with you hovering or asking questions. I'm about as curious as they come, so I tend to hover as well, but if I notice them having an attitude or getting defensive or whatever, I'll just back off and let them do their thing.

If I'm on the opposite side, especially if it's something I'm passionate about, I LOVE when people ask questions and watch what I'm doing.

I can normally do my job and hold a conversation with the customer - no problem. However when some weird problem arises and I need to concentrate on what I am doing the hovering gets pretty annoying.

Then I have customers that tell me that they used to work in some completely unrelated field. And proceed to rape my ear by expressing their knowledge of what I do as it pertains to what they used to do.

It would go a lot smoother if they just went in the other room and waited for me to finish.

I always hover because I want to learn what they are doing so hopefully I dont have to pay them next time.

When I'm detailing, I have head phones in while the buffer is going so they can talk but I may not respond. Unless I am showing them something, I usually let them know I don't mind for them to watch but time is money. They usually let me do my thing, it's to save them money after all.

This. Most of the shit we pay people to do around our homes is simply not that difficult to do. Very rarely do a I pay a professional to do something the second time around.

Yes. I like to make sure the work gets done properly and on time. I can't stand people who milk the clock or make mistakes often.

If you don't know how to do something yourself - how do you know if someone else is doing it "right" or "wrong"?

When I worked with my buddy pouring concrete, we hated when the home owners would hover. It wasn't because we didn't do quality work - we were one of the best in the area - it was just an annoying distraction.

Answering the same questions over and over and over again gets old quick, and having somebody in your ear while you're busting your ass is worse.

I always watch work being done on cars to pool equipment etc. Seen too much shady shit in the past. But with saying that, that's why I do most of my own repairs if I can, that way I feel it was done right.
