I know they are not the same. Father to me is more of a technical term or description, as some have said you can Father a child without being a dad.
For instance. My 8 yr old knows me as his dad and when he gets old enough to figure things out on his own he will learn I am not his father. He can go to his mom about that one. It won't change the fact that he may consider me his Father but most definitely won't change the dad part.

Its all in how you were raised and what you were taught. Obviously they both are the same thing in the dictionary.

Being a single mom child, I still call him my dad (pops, usually, but he's my dad to me), even though I only saw him every other weekend. He's always tried to give me all he could... Probably moreso, since he couldn't necessarily give me time. When I was a child, I was comfortable with the surroundings that I grew up in, and sometimes hated going to my dad's because he wouldn't let me get away with some of the shit that mom did. Now I wished I would have spent more ti,e with him. He's one of my best friends now and I couldn't ask for a better relationship with him. I never say "i love you," nor does he (it's a manly ego thing with us, I guess), but it's there in every hug we give and that says more than words. How do we forget ourselves? How do we forget our minds?

Going by the common use of the words in "Father's day" and in "dead beat dad", you had it backwards.
I personally don't the there is a difference between the two.
Good dad= good father
bad dad=bad father
