Not true. I got the belt once or twice from my dad, but his main tool for the job was a nice piece of hardwood formed into the shape of a boat oar. He broke that thing three times on my ass. Granted, some times I'd laugh at the spankings, but it made me think about the consequences(dont care how to spell it, didn't look it up) next time around.

For example. I spank my daughter, her grandparents and my wife 'swat' my daughter or talk to her about things. Who do you think she fears the most? I can look at her and ask her if she wants a spanking and 9.5 times out of 10 she stops what she's doing, tells me no, and goes on about her business.

There's a time for talking and a time for spanking.

As soon as mine was old enough to know the word 'no' she was old enough for a spanking. Not a balls out get the leather strop, but a swat here and there. This started about the age of 2, they get progessivly harder the older she gets, but that's part of being a good parent is knowing how hard and when to hit.

Yep. Every kid will test boundaries at a different age, and in different manners. Only the parent will know when the time is right, because every child is different and every parent will have different opinions on what is acceptable and what isn't.

I suppose different kids respond to different methods. I was a pretty damn good kid. I was spanked hard, but I didn't really care about pain. It certainly didn't teach me any lessons. I would fuck myself up as a kid riding my bike or skateboard, or jumping off of roofs, or getting shot with a pellet gun, etc, and get right back up and keep going. Pain sucks for a bit, but then it's all back to normal. Piece of cake!

I remember getting spankings by the school principal. Other kids would come out screaming and crying. I just tried to hide my smile when it was my turn.

Depending on what I did wrong, my mom would come into my room and take away everything fun - toys, TV, radio, etc, and leave me with a set of encyclopedias and shit else. Sometimes this would last 6 weeks at a time. I could come out for meals and a shower and then back to my room I would go. It was miserable, and I never wanted to have to do it again. I'd beg for a spanking if it would end the grounding.

Oh, and I learned a hell of a lot during those times. I read a lot of shit in those encyclopedias!

Some of you guys are some serious jackasses taking anything anyone says and twisting for the sake of drama. You guys talk so much shit about being pussies, but yet you sit back and talk shit like little girls.

My comment wasn't about spankings, it was about beating a kid with a belt to the point of bruising. If it gets to that point, no one is learning anything.


Everyday people get on this board making comments from one thread to the other about how the world is going to hell in a hand basket. About how moral standards are so low, people are less trustoworthy more than ever etc etc etc.

But yet, here is a thread with a bunch of people, several I suspect that don't even have kids of their own preaching to others about how to properly raise children. Your perspective is much different after having children of your own, than before you had them when you can say your parents did this or that to you.

So which is it, the ways of the past actually work or not? Society is in the shitter, but hey, lets stick to what we are all taught and beat our kids to perpetuate the cycle! Ridiculous.

I dont think it's so much being a pussy as it is bein a pushover. For one, almost every Dad I know is a pushover with their daughter. Which is what Steve has. And every kid is different, too. Some kids respond to a stern voice and learn their lesson. My brother was this way. Me, well... Belts, paddles, spoons, a switch from a tree... Nothing was going to stop me from doing what I wanted to do.

Spanking is a last resort in my house. They get one warning, if they don't listen, it goes to military style punishment. If they still don't get it, then they get spanked.

IMO, there are two types of parents. Those that make empty threats (don't think the kid doesn't know you're full of shit), and those that don't make threats, but rule quietly instead.

Respectfully, I wasn't judging you, just genuinely shocked at the bruising comment. I'm not against spankings, just beatings to the point of causing physical harm such as bruising which in turn will cause emotional trauma.

Ask anyone on this board who has met my little girl, she is the sweetest, happiest little girl you will ever meet. She's never that kid you hear screaming in public like at the store or in a restaraunt. She's a rare gem and we get compliments are her sweet disposition and her behavior on a regular basis.

As for myself being a pushover, complete nonsense. As you mentioned, she's the type of kid a stern voice with Daddy's base voice in a serious tone is often enough to bring her tears. I'm a very protective father, from other people and from herself. As I'm sure you know, little girls aren't to be handled like rough boys. A small pop on the hand, or pop on the bum to get her attention at most is all that is needed. But beating her with a belt to the point of bruising her? Never.
