Anyone been to Mount Rushmore recently?

Going to Colorado to visit my parents in a couple weeks, and thought about maybe driving up to SD to see Mt Rushmore, and some other outdoor attractions in that area. Probably just a short 2 day trip (leave Sunday return to their house Monday).

Anyone been, have any recommendations on a decent hotel, or any to stay away from?

I thought there was some bad flooding that direction. Might hamper the route you would normally have to take. Worth looking into.

In the mountains? Doubtful.

I went a few years ago, take a day and spend in Deadwood. It's a blast and has gambling as well as historical displays (such as shootouts in the street).

We walked up Mt. Moriah (cemetery). It was cool to see Wild Bill's grave along with a ton of other western historical figures.


Keystone isn't a bad little town, but a little tourist trapish. With kids it was fine but Deadwood would probably be more your style.

I wouldn't mind seeing Deadwood, but after the popularity of the show with the same name, I would think that would be more of a tourist trap than Keystone.

I went about 3years ago, just passing through. We stayed @ la quinta right off the highway. There was a cool old firehouse that was converted into a brewpub, downtown. Pretty good food and the beer they brewed was awesome.

But the ones in Deadwood involve white people dressed as cowboys and blanks. Total opposite of Oak Cliff.

Just got back from Wyoming and South Dakota. After you see Mt. Rushmore make sure you make the 10 mile or so journey to Crazy Horse. They aren't finished with the monument yet, but there is tons to see and it is pretty interesting seeing how it was started.
