No I wouldn't use bungee cords. I'd tie the bow and stern up on the car to the frame, make sure it's tight but not too tight where you're cracking a bumper.

Awesome, thanks. What about a place like Dick's or Academy? I obviously haven't done any research before posting...mostly because you guys know everything and it's just easier this way LOL.

I found a little hidden access point to Lake Lewisville near the house and have been looking at kayak's recently...seemed like good omen. It's great exercise and fun on the water...except was unsure about the getting there part.
