That's pretty interesting...I need to brush up in my aircraft history instead of focusing on all the new stuff. I absolutely loved the national air and space museum.

One of these days I want to go down to Galveston and fly on the B-17 that the Lone Star Flight Museum operates. Not too many chances to experience a flight on a plane like that.

A piece of American history gone forever.

“It’s a sad day but a good one in that no one was hurt,” Brooks said. “An airplane can be replaced.”
I appreciate the optimism, but no that one can't be replaced.

A quick looks shows that jet fuel burns in the open air at 600F, and I just don't see that being an ignition temperature for sheet. Maybe there's some chemistry going on when the fuel hits the metal that I'm not aware of, or it's actually an alloying element contributing to the metal fire like magnesium or something. Either way, can you point me in the direction of supporting evidence so I actually understand more of why that would happen?
Right on. Think of it as like when you put a beer can in a camp fire. There's no jet fuel, though.

oh hell i did the beer in a campfire bit. it was a bottle. and then my dumb ass spit on it once i saw it boiling inside. i ended up looking like one of those charaters in the cartoons with a exploded cigar in my face.

I remember seeing that on PBS back in the day, but forgot about it burning to the ground. Could you imagine standing there watching it burn and being helpless to stop it. I would want to kick babies I would be so distraught.

                      Would like to add -

It wasn't a crash. It was a perfect off field airport landing. Glad to hear the pax and crew made it out alive. Sorry so tired of hearing the media refer to it as a "crash", when it wasn't.

They were a lot calmer than I would have been that's for sure.

I about wanted to cry at the end of that documentary. All the blood, sweat and tears, the historical value of the plane...the *poof*...
