Did anyone suggest emailing a link to this thread to the bosses?

As I stated last Friday, I got a new job. Today I'm going to give my notice. The challenge is that I work from home. My boss is in Tennessee and his boss is in Michigan. None of them are reachable by phone this morning.

I think it is important to mention that I'm not interested in burning any bridges. I might want to work for this company again in the future. I'm leaving mainly due to money and a lack of growth potential. I'm also a little ticked that I got a promotion that had no pay increase or new responsibilities.

It's funny, my boss actually said that my promotion would "Look good on my resume". On Friday I found out that he was right....

            How about...dear sirs... I quit

Resurrecting this one to add a bit of timing to the question.
Background: I finally got the job I've always wanted. However, I've had my current position for 18 years and I'm in the middle of some pretty big projects. Most will extend past my new job start date.

The conundrum: So, do I give 2 weeks or a month?

                  Candid thoughts are welcome.

2 weeks is sufficient. I gave a month when I was a GM @ Fastenal and they started treating me like (bigger) shit, asking me to extend, and the situation just got contentious. Plus it damaged the relationship with customers because they witnessed how I was being treated.

As of your last day, no projects you were working are your problem. I don't burn bridges either, and 2 weeks is plenty for them to delegate your responsibilities to someone until they can backfill.

On another note, I sell Enterprise Software solutions that typically require Oracle or SQL databases with standalone servers, App servers, and most commonly JBOSS or Websphere. This year, 3 out of the 4 deals I've sold have all gone on VMware.

It appears to be taking over from customary standalone architecture...

                        2 weeks is plenty time.

If your employee number came up on a lay off, do you think they will give you an extra 2 weeks because you have bills to pay?

As much as we all hate to admit it, the company will not fail without us.

You can be loyal to a company, but they for damn sure aren't going to be loyal back.
