On another note, I sell Enterprise Software solutions that typically require Oracle or SQL databases with standalone servers, App servers, and most commonly JBOSS or Websphere. This year, 3 out of the 4 deals I've sold have all gone on VMware.

It appears to be taking over from customary standalone architecture...
Do you have any customers or prostpecs in CA? If so, I handle 80+% of the states Microsoft (SQL), and have sold about $10MM of Oracle to LA DWP specifically in the last year and a half.

Actually, it is! I'll be YOUR customer. (Granted not directly. ;-)) But yes, I'll have the vertical badge where yours is horizontal. Get over to the plant or let me know when you're in Whitsettlement and we'll do lunch or something!! There's a place called "Taste of Asia" that is to die for in WS. If you know where it is, let's hit it!!!

dang it...I just realized that was a year ago.

I work remotely about half the time. My boss has never been to my workplace, and we've been here since '99.

It's a new world. (not sent from my work PC)

                          Sounds good Darren.

I gues the main reason is the idiots that use it do not know how to set it up properly. For example, they have an ESX server with 10 images runnng on it, and give each image a fuck-ton of memory and CPU (say the ESX server has 16 cpu's, they give EACH image 16!), thinking they each can use it no matter what. Never mind the fact that when they all are running, the actual ESX server is being pushed to its limits, and then they wonder why shit runs slow...

Or they set up a drive and allocate ALL the space at once, then wonder why the ESX server is out of disk space...

                            Just general dumbassery really.

Just saw this one. Read my post above!

It also depends on what you are using the server for. Our software is heavy, heavy DB transactions, so any latency is noticed. We have clients that need to increase the speed of transactions by milliseconds sometimes. NASDAQ runs some of our software, I sure wouldn't want that on a VMWare image! You just can't beat the pure speed/power of a huge Solaris server!

But again, it all depends on how it is set up and configured.

Wow, talk about bringing up an old thread.

I guess I could update you fellas on what happened to me. I gave my notice last June and my boss asked for the chance to make a counter offer. Sure enough, HP decided to match the offer and give me two months salary as a retention bonus. I also got some veto power on the assignments I'm given.

Since then, my job has gotten a lot more challenging, in a good way. Not every thing is perfect, of course, but it is good enough that I've been inclined to turn down several job offers that have come my way.
