The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air.

When sunlight hits water vapor in the sky, the water vaper acts as a prism and bends the light to a frequency that our eyes pick it up as "blue." That's why when the sun goes down, it's hitting the sky above us at a more dramatic angle, goes through more vapor, and eventually by the time the light hits our eyes, we see it as more orange or red, because the lightwaves have an even lower frequency."Any dog under 50lbs is a cat and cats are pointless." - Ron Swanson
