Irate Neighbor Situation, Overreaction on my part?

You make a good point, and like I said, I am not innocent here. When I went down to chat with him I planned to apologize, but after only making it half way down the drive before being screamed at my demeanor probably began it's rapid change. Then once the name calling began I was really having to level myself out not to say or do something that might cause me more grief. My question here is not "is it okay to ride a pit bike through the neighborhood", rather, "is it okay/normal to feel the need to grab a weapon when someone approaches your home, especially if you know that person was upset when they last left your home". It seems that the general consensus is that it is normal, which is reassuring because it was my natural instinct. I just really hope that none of my immediate neighbors saw either of the exchanges!

Is it wrong that I have my .40 near me while in the garage?

I have a special little shelf for mine right above my workbench. Plus I've got a convex mirror right above where I stand most of the time. My bench is at the front of the garage, so I want to see what's going on in the doorway. This day and age you never know what might happen.

Evidently that's just the way it went in my head. I had to go back and re-read. But otherwise, even if it was broad daylight, it's still not something I would have done. I live in a neighborhood full of old folks and empty nesters and don't really see the neighborhood streets as the best place for something like that.

I agree that it's not the best place, but it's not wildly inappropriate either, IMO. My neighborhood is also quiet, filled with old folks, etc. Everyone is very friendly (with the exception of one house), and not overly worried about the actions of others unless there is good reason. I see this as no different than making a lap around the block after some carb tuning, etc. As long as you're not tearing up people's yards, or being an annoying asshole, no big deal IMO. Maybe I just got lucky with my neighbors, maybe they were already accustomed to it (there is a kid on the block that races dirtbikes, and his Dad will make the occasional lap after a clutch change, tuning, etc. It's ridiculous to load up all your gear and tools and go to a track just to test a few simple changes.


Growing up, we lived in a neighboorhood where half of the block was undeveloped, and a lot of dirt/hills. We'd get out there in the dune buggy, and three wheelers, and fuck around for hours on end. The neighbors never complained, and several would even join us. The cops never complained, they'd stop by and watch. Now everyone is so damn nosey and concerned with what everyone else is doing. It's ridiculous.

He said that his brother got royally screwed by insurance since he was on a vehicle that was not street legal. Apparently a car ran a stop sign and hit him and he got stuck with the bill. Granted, that really sucks, but for him to chase my buddy down seems counter-productive to his cause?

His brother didn't really get screwed by insurance, per se. The bike isn't street legal and it's just not covered by an automobile insurance policy. Actually, a lot of automobile insurance policies won't cover your injuries if you're on a street legal motorcycle. If someone wants injury protection, i.e. Personal Injury Protection or Medical Payments Coverage, they need to purchase a motorcycle policy, or something that would cover the bike they're riding. Sucks, but like momma says, sometimes it beez that way.

Perfectly acceptable. I'm very territorial when it comes to my domain. I live in a cul de sac off of a fairly quiet street, so any traffic that comes through that is not a resident gets the old stink eye from everyone. Kind of like a "You lost, boy?" If I'm outside during the day I even tell the door to door flier carriers to keep moving.

What you should be asking yourself is why you didn't go in the house and grab your heater after he left the first time.

I live on a cul de sac as well, off a pretty quiet street. There is no reason for anyone to go into our neighborhood unless they are going to a home inside of it, and if you are deep enough into the neighborhood to be by my house then you should be a resident or visitor of someones home. So I do the same thing, there are only 5 homes on our cul de sac, and I know each of the neighbors.

My fiancée brought up the same thing, why did you grab a pipe versus getting the gun after the first encounter. I just really never thought that the guy would come back, I figured that it got heated there in the street and if anything were going to happen it would happen there. Honestly I was waiting for the police to show up, not this guy again. Once I saw that he had returned and was half way up the drive I didn't want to retreat into the home leaving at least one of the garage doors open (3 car, 1 single 1 double, but the openers are by each of the doors that lead to the garage (2 doors from the house to the garage). So if I'd have gone inside I'd have left at least one garage door open and one door into the home unlocked, so I just grabbed the pipe and went outside.

I know several people who would have grabbed a gun, so a pipe sounds completely reasonable. I usually park my vette with the windows down and there is a .40 I can reach without opening the door, so that would be my first option for a threat in my garage/driveway.
