I went through a drive-thru ATM on Saturday to pull out some cash, and after waiting in line, I pull up and the screen says, "Take card or another transaction".
The guy was just pulling out of the parking lot so I hit "take card" and caught up with him at the first light. It dawned on him the moment I held up his card what had happened and he was greatly appreciative. Sometimes it's amazing what a sincere "thank you" can do to make your day.
This was the second time in the past few years this has happened...

I hit an ATM on base in Fallon it gave me the $200 I had asked for, then while I was BS'ing with someone behind me it spit out another $200. When I walked into the branch on base their reaction was "Oh it's doing it again?" I gave it back and it never hit my account that it gave me $400 total.. Thinking of trying the old ATM lotto machine there instead of the ones in town.

It may or may not get back to the rightful owner, but it wasnt mine.
Is honesty that much of a rarity today? Would you have kept it?

When I was a kid growing up in Austin, we didn't have shit. My mom raised three of us, and made so little money, that we got kicked out of a subsidized housing complex and moved in with my G-ma. In 1973, I worked at Zilker Park (Barton Springs) at the concession stand for $1.20 an hour. At closing, I had to clean off/hose off the picnic tables by the pool. One night I found a wallet on a table, put it in my pocket, and took it home. At home, my mom opened it up to find approx. $1700 cash, some credit cards, and an ID for a captain for American Airlines. There was contact info inside, so she called American Airlines and they told mom how to call him. The next day, he came back to the park, came up to me and demanded his wallet. I gave it to him, and watched him open and count his money, close it up, and walk off. No "thanks", "eat shit and die"...nothing. Mom found out when I got home and called him up. She tore his shit DOWN, and told him how she was trying to raise an honest kid and what an asshole SOB he was for not even saying "thanks". Of course he apologized, but it affected me until I was an adult. I never stole anything, but if I found it, it was mine.
After all that, I would have returned the $320. I have to sleep at night.
