  • anyone do electronics repair

Have a few things i want to have repaired. one is a portable DVD player that wont read discs and the other is a JL audio E1800d Amplifier for car audio. the Amp is the biggest thing i want fixed. it wont put out sound so im thinking its possibly the RCA inputs r jacked....it doesnt throw the protection circuit but i cant figure out why it wont put out sound.......anyhow i would rather put $$$ in a stangers pocket than JL Audios.

The DVD player may be set up for the wrong regional coding (google it). As for the amp, get a battery powered test light, and disconnect it from the car's power, then test the circuits. Odds are, something's connected wrong.

if it won't read the discs, it is normally one of two things - The laser is dirty or the laser is weak. The easiest thing to do is clean the lens(use a cleaning disc [a few $$ at WalMart]). If it doesn't work after being cleaned, it's probably the laser and probably cheaper to replace the unit rather than repair it. Especially this time of year.

We don't even check in DVD players(portable or home) anymore because there isn't any money in repairing them.

Yale - Unless he bought some the disc or player from somewhere strange, the regional coding normally isn't an issue. Also, to me it sounds like it was working and now it doesn't. When we did work on DVD players, I only ever saw 2 players that weren't region 1 players and only a few discs that weren't region 1.

Doesn't EW do car audio/alarms? You may check and see if he knows something about the amp, or he may have somebody he uses for repairs.

DVD player probably isn't worth fixing. I think I saw a portable one in this weeks Best Buy ad that was going for $58. You could probably talk to EW about the amp repair but I'm pretty sure they outsource it to someone.

We send JL products back to JL Audio. They have a flat rate repair price and they not only repair the product but they even do any other updates that the amps have seen since the build date.

Cool I guess it going back to jl then and Yale, I'm no fucking idiot. I can wire anything from a house to a car. But I won't dive into amplifier internals and risk fucking it up more

As for the DVD player I bought it off craigslist and got fucked. It looks brand new and I tried cleaning the laser. Figured if I could get it fixed for 60 bucks it would be worth it since my daughter would use it for her tinkerbell instead of my 50"

Would you know what that fee is exactly?

I can probably take a look at the amp and see if it is something cheap/easy to fix before you send it off. I can't promise I'll do anything more than take up your time, but I'm willing to take a shot at it.
