  • Nerve Surgery...

So the 31st I'm having surgery on my radial digital nerve ... he said once he has my hand open,if the nerve is too mangled he will have to graft a nerve from my wrist and proceed that way... Just curious if anyone has had this done or something like it... How or what was your pain level?!

    Back Story:
Opening a pop top soup can- the lid broke off while I was opening it,ended up with a big laceration on my hand(between my thumb and index finger.) Fat,etc was hanging out- the INTERN at Harris Hospital just stuffed my hand "fat" back in my hand and stitched over it... Come to find out.. it was my nerve and not just "fat."

Best of luck. If you have a good surgeon and some luck, you might regain close to full motor function again.

Harris Hospital, huh? I can't say I'm shocked.

I wouldnt be mad at the "intern"... odds are they werent going to do anything about it anyways in an emergency setting. When we have lacerations like that to the hand, we get them stitched up and refer them to the hand specialist.

I've never had a problem with them in the past.. but I now know- I will NEVER go back! I'm going to Ted Peters in Grapevine- I've heard nothing but good things and my family doctor sent me to him... So I guess we will see. He said he is going to try his hardest to help me re-gain feeling..

Well it would have been nice to be refered to a hand specialist prior to leaving the hospital... but I wasn't.. I made the choice to see my family doctor cause I knew something wasn't right. I'm not mad at the intern, she did a good job.. BUT I wish that a doctor, doctors,or a surgeon would have looked at it while I was there...

I hate to be negative about a doctor....but Dr Peters (not sure of which brother) was the physician that took care of my fiance's sister. She had hand numbness and partial paralysis to her hand and he diagnosed it as a nerve problem. Adding up it was carpal tunnel. I went to North Texas Orthopedics when I broke my wrists years ago and saw Dr. Moffett there. Hes a nice guy.

Dr.Peters has a brother and my family doctor told me NOT to see his brother(that he was worthless, etc etc..) but to see Ted.. I made sure I didn't see his brother LOL!

One more time little tid bit. Surgeon probably wouldnt do an emergency consult on something like that. Harris is a big hospital but odds are it wouldnt qualify. Im not a doctor, didnt see the injury or anything, but the odds of that are slim. Also, the intern is practicing under a physician. If you feel uncomfortable about your treatment of care, never be afraid to ask for the attending physician to voice your concern. Whether is a resident doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant, you can always ask for the doctor.

Dont know how much it hurts....but all the people I have met that have had nerve surgery said its a very long road to recovery. Dont expect immediate results. Its can take longer than a year to get back to 100%. I have met a handful of people through work that have had great success and one or two failures.

Your pain will be treated symptomatically post surgery. The quickest road to recovery is an earnest and dedicated approach to the post operative Physical Therapy. Not really the same thing; However, I had a L5/S1 disc herniation and the PT and cortisone shots did a lot for pain management (sciatica) & regaining full range of motion/strength. PT is the key. Make your appointments and work hard. I think you will have a good prognosis, if you have a good surgical outcome and work hard in PT.
