I agree both choices leave a lot to be desired. I will give a warning on the new VWs, I had to do an extended test drive on a brand new one I repaired with 500 miles and hope I don't have to drive another over a mile again. They cheapened the new body style up compared to the previous model, I reccomend a 2010 if you go VW. The stealership told me they reduced costs on it to compete with the Korean car manufacturers. Just a FYI.

As per motortrend as well. I'd stay far away from that VW if I was you. Get the 2010.

I guess I would just rather not have to deal with warranty issues...because warranty or not..your still without your car while they fix it.

Depends on the warranty, mine's been in twice, and got to drive a brand new 2011 both times while my car was worked on. I agree with it being good having a warranty on my primary car, I drive worry-free, and mine's paid for itself already.

My choice would depend on the situation, I'd daily the C5 if I had another car, but if it were to be my only car, I'd consider the GTI. I'd have to drive both before making the decision though.

I have an 01 TDI and have had no issues. It also has 185,000 miles on it. 54 miles to the gallon on good days, never gotten worse than 45 mpg. I would like to think that it's not a "piece of shit" and really like the car.

To the OP, if you care about the MPG, I'd look at the diesels, it's a little more money, but worth it IMHO. Good luck.
