And that's why I always wear foil under my clothes.

So youre saying that they taught you that guys should only wear a tie for an interview if it's upper level management?

        I call bullshit.

And I agree with not wearing a suit if it fits piss poor. The tailoring of my suits typically cost a hundred or more.
Then I was working at a auto dealer group body shop, in the parts department. Later I was interviewing route delivery drivers.

Dressing nicely scores points. It is possible to over dress, depending on the position you are interviewing for. I wanted to make when I was interviewing people that they were capable of dressing presentable.

It's clear that some of you are basing your advice off of the very limited personal experience you've had, which has been the exception, and not the rule.

It's great if you landed a job in your gym shorts and wife beaters, a sombrero, and Scooby Doo slippers, but for most decent paying professional jobs, you're better off wearing at least a tie, if not a suit.

For the record, I've never worn a suit a day in my life. Never owned one. I still realize that it's the best practice when interviewing for a decent paying sales job. I've luckily gotten by with just a tie so far.

                Jared,

Where in here did i say you couldnt wear a tie if it wasnt upper management. I clearly stated that it depends on the type of job. I was just giving scenerios or examples if you like.

I have always been told to dress one step above the dress code for the position you are interviewing. So if business casual is the attire then wear a tie, and a sports coat if winter. If the normal attire is a tie, wear a suit. If the normal attire is jeans then a button up and slacks should suffice.

If the normal attire is Scooby Doo slippers, then some Crocks will probably pass.

I think we need to know WTF the OP is interviewing for. All we've been able to do so far is speculate.

yep...even if it's for a stock boy job at Tom Thumb.

Stephen, I didn't read the entire thread but some good advice is:

Alway dress one to two levels above what the job's dress code would be.
A Navy or medium Gray suit for the first interview, and never a black suit for the first one.
If it's business casual, earth tones and no loud colors (red, etc..)

                            Good luck man.

Sorry, I should've put it in the original post. It's for an auto/diesel instructor. All the shops Iv applied at I just wore black shoes, slacks, and a button up but since this would be a teaching job I was thining I might ned to dress up more than I usually do.
