What does it take to get a CDL

My son needs to get one for his job with the rail road. What all is required and how easy is it to get?

Its not hard at all. What i did was read a section of the handbook and study it. Take online practice test and once you have those down take the test. It took me one week to get my class a this way. I would take a test in the morning , pass it and study for the next. Not hard at all.

That's not exactly a straight forward question. Will he need a Class B or Class A? Any endorsements?

If it's a B, it's four written tests and a simple driving test. If it's an A, there are some additional tests and the driving test is pretty much the same. Adding any endorsements just means more testing. My best suggestion, study up. There are plenty of resources online. CRST has a good "mock test" that will prepare him.

Get to the DMV early for the driving test....they only do so many per day. And practice the air brake test a lot.

go schedule/take driving test, pass= boom you got CDL.

I forget the name but its a private owned company that sets up the towers and lights that controll the crossing arms. RCL I think.

I don't think so, i only have to take the haz mat when i renew my lic. Now the friggen $100 for fbi fingerprints is bullshit. Hasn't been mentioned yet but DOT physical is required for CDL-A.

I'm pretty sure he is allowed to drive as a trainee with another CDL driver to get his practice.
