Jeep history?

Anyone here happen to really know Jeep history?

I'm looking at a 1955 Jeep Willys M38A1 and I want to know if the CJ5 was the civilian version of the M38A1?

I was in the same boat you are. I was looking at a CJ and glad I held off for the m38a1. The actual military version has so much more of a cool factor.

That being said if your intentions are to go wheeling or rock crawling etc Id say the CJ, as to not butcher a M38.

This is definitely not for wheeling. I want to rebuild a M38. Why is it some of the M38's look like CJ's and some don't?

The m38a1 replaced the m38 (flat fender) in 1952 and was produced for the US into the 60's. The Canadians used them for much longer. Although it resembles a CJ there are some differences such as the CJ has the tailgate whereas the M38a1 has a solid tub. I dont know alot about the differences but theres alot of good info and knowledgable people over at G503.com

Put a post on Craigslist last night looking for one and I had a reply this morning from a guy who says he's got one in need of a lot of work. He did say it doesn't have an engine but he's just trying to get rid of it and said he'd take $100. I'm waiting for more info an pics on it, hopefully it's not rusted out.

I'm still waiting to hear the condition of the jeep but the guy has the body, frame, axles, transmission, and transfer case. I'm also waiting on more info on the condition of everything as well as pics.

For a hunsky you cant go wrong, but keep in mind if your going back to military specs all the little stuff will nickel and dime you to death.

If that stuff is in good condition that's probably a good start, especially for $100. The only bad thing is I don't think this guy knows what he has. I asked him if it's a M38A1 and he said he's not sure, it's either a 41 or an 842... which I have no clue what he's talking about.

I'm hoping he'll get me pictures soon.

Talked to the guy with the jeep I was interested in and unfortunately it's the wrong year and model. He's not sure what model it is but he knows it's a 1941 willys, I know that's way too early for what I'm wanting. It's also been sitting outside uncovered for the past 15 years, so I can only imagine what sort of a rust bucket it is.
