i think the more telling items are this :

he was shot at an apartment
then the suspects ransacked the apt, while he's down

cops still never showed up and apprehended the suspects!
proof of why you answer the door with a gun!
seriously at an apartment someone HAD to have heard the gunshot, it's like impossible that wasn't reported pretty quickly.
