  • Picking up an old, but free RV. Need help

A buddy of mine was offered this RV for free so some of us are going to pitch in the work and money so we can all share it. Its about a 76 Itasca. It has a SBC. Except for the hideous 70's interior colors, overall its in pretty good condition, but it hasn't been started in about 15 years. Most of its life it was kept covered which helped keep it decent. We're looking to update the interior and fix it up. Some things we wonder about.

    - Has an LP gas system for stove/fridge. Are there regulations for how old a system can be used? I know places won't refill old propane bottles. I was just wondering if there might be anything to watch out for with this?
    - Can you register an RV as an antique and save on the regs?
    - How would you go about insuring it so several different drivers could be covered? How is this usually handled?

Any other caveats of things to watch out for?

    Not sure, contact the DMV
I would think each guy's would cover himself

I always thought insurance covered the vehicle regardless who drove it as long as they had a valid D/L.

That is how it is on my car. I had the stipulations of no one under 18 could drive it and now it's at no one under 21 can drive it, but other than that as long as you have a valid DL it should be covered.

What kind of things cost $$$ for RV's? Where are the typical problems?

The way we see it, split 4 ways, it shouldn't be too bad. Still beats monthly payments on a new one. Another thing is that my buddy works for large corporation that supplies RV parts so he can get most things at deep discounts or free. We plan to rip out the guacamole green carpet and replace with some new pergo one of the guys has left from a job. His Mom has offered to sew new curtains and cushion covers if we supply the materials. His Dad is a p & b guy and will handle the paint. I'm taking on the generator and the engine tune up work.

As if we're not glutton for punishment enough, there might be a boat in the deal for a little cash too.

No picks yet, but we brought it home tonight. Are there any good RV message boards to learn more?

So do i and was going to say the same thing.

check ALL your seals. If the roof is rubber and their are no visible cracks or holes, buy some Dicor roof sealant and go around ALL the vents. And that's just for starters. Trust me, IF their is a way, water will find it's way in. And you want that shit fixed ASAP.
