The ex grew up in RP and his dad commuted to Torrey Pines which could take upwards to an hour and a half. There are portions that are absolutely gorgeous, but the incorporated areas just aren't my thing for the most part. If I were to pick an area to live, it would be Temecula. Ramona wasn't bad when we looked at it, I have no idea what it's like now, though.

I guess I was just lucky. I got a raise moving from CA to TX in '05 and now 6 years later I make about 50% more than I did when I left CA. This is all with the same company (telecom).
For me the price of real estate, car laws, and gun laws were the main things that helped me decide to leave.
I lived up in wine country in Sonoma County near the ocean. When I left houses were 4-6 times as much as an equivalent house here. Now they are down quite a bit but still about double the price.Atlantic Blue '00 - '03 Cobra motor and TKO600, solid axle, full MM suspension

I think I found the house I want... no HOA, big yard, palm trees, lots of windows & only 2 miles from 24 Hour Fitness. I hope it's still on the market when my house sells. The property tax there is the same on a $350K house as it is on my current $150K house. http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/30.../52502892_zpid

I currently live in a hotel so i don't have any real estate advice except to save your pennies. I've not really run into any rude people out here. Every parking space is tiny so sell that suburban - you will not be able to park it, and if you manage to park it you'll be crawling out the windows.
The weather is hard to beat. Right now we're having the "may gray" which will be followed by the "june gloom" - overcast weather, but the temps are nice.
Traffic between SD and LA is insane. We left LA one sunday night headed back to SD and the traffic was completely solid going north from SD to LA! And i hear that's normal.
The liberal politics and liberal people may drive you crazy but if i was offered a permanent job out here i would seriously consider taking it.
