Dell ran my credit, and i have a few bumps along the way including some medical bill collections from when an employer let my insurance go unpaid and the employees didn't know about it. I also have something from collections from 6 years ago that falls off this year, and I don't even remember what it was for. At the time of getting hired I had a 600 credit score and a BK as well.

Must not have been enough to keep me from getting the job, I think they are moreso looking for completely miserable credit as a means to weed out people. I guess I was still in the average category

Even with a Tax Lein on his credit, it shouldn't be that big of deal, it's not settled.

If you're handling cash and you have bad credit/unpaid bills then as an employee you're a higher fraud (theft) risk to the business. It is a reasonable action to take. If the job has no opportunity to handle money then it shouldn't matter. In retail, it's reasonable that an employee may have to take customer payments.

I've had to fire an employee in the past who committed internal fraud after getting themselves into financial trouble so would not hire without a clean credit check (also declined candidates based soley on credit).

I've been trying to quit using credit so my score is probably droppping. Whenever I have an interview I tell them that if they check it that's why it's going down. I rather let them know up front that I'm responsible with my money before they form their own opinion from just a number.

Guess I'd better keep my job...

Had to file for Bankruptcy a few years ago due to the economy, loss of employment and an Ex who was hiding large sums of bills....

No fast food jobs for me I guess.... LOL

Probably depends on the job, but its real common for employers to check credit scores.

Kim, that very well might be the case. Said relative lives in another state but is moving to the DFDub so im sure ill get a better sense of exactly that. For his sake, I hope a change of scenery will help his situation.

Thanks for the info/opinion folks. I dont blame any employer for doing a check. Yes you may accidentally weed out a perfect hire but im sure more often than not, its a pretty good indicator.

This has been pretty standard for at least 20 years.. If you are unable to manage your personal finances why should anyone in their right mind put you into a position where you are the control of their money.

I don't see them checking credit for entry level hourly jobs such as things for hourly wage jobs at HD/Lowes. Salary jobs where you've got access to large amounts of money where you can issue checks, etc I can see. Sounds to me like the relative is not being completely truthful. Then again, a change of scenery and being around the right people can make all the difference in the world if someone's willing to put forward the effort.

My current employer checks credit before employment as well. It is a growing trend that is being seen in corporations all over the Country. Personally, I like it.

He said thanks to that lean, no one will hire him. He had even tried to apply at places like Lowes and Home Depot just to get back on his feet (has experience in the construction arena) and claims they won’t hire him because of his credit.

Though I know credit checks happen, I wouldnt figure they would do them for a mesely hourly job at a retail store. I have a feeling hes bending the truth, but maybe not?
On his next interview tell him to stand up straight and he might have a better chance. I have a sneaking suspicion that the tax lien could be hurting him though.
