My dad will be undergoing a liver transplant tomorrow morning at Baylor All Saints. This will be his second transplant. He has hep C and developed a tumor on his (original) liver which was treated with chemo. Due to the chemo and hep C, his liver was badly damaged and did not function properly. He underwent his first liver transplant in October 2008.
He recovered from the transplant and even returned to work as a CPA. He became very ill shortly after returning to work and ended up in ICU with sepsis. It was determined the hepatic artery was clogged. The hepatic artery supplies blood to the liver. Without proper bloodflow, parts of the liver were dying and the infection from the dead tissue spread to his blood.
He managed to survive the sepsis. They placed drains in the necrotic areas of the liver to allow all of the shit to drain out to prevent further infections. Since then, his liver has slowly deteriorated to the point where he is again suffering liver failure. He was second on the transplant list for the last couple weeks. The woman in first was transplanted and he was at the top of the list for about 3 days before receiving the call today.
My parents are getting to the hospital right now. The surgery is scheduled for 6 AM tomorrow. I'll head over there early tomorrow morning to drop off my dog at my fiancee's house and see my dad before surgery. The survival rate for a second transplant isn't great, but without the transplant he'll die so this is his shot.
I'm not really friends with anyone on the board and I've only met a handful of you so I don't really know why I'm posting this. It's quite cathartic though.
I'm off to eat dinner and drink a few more so I can hopefully get some sleep. I'll keep everyone updated.
PS. Dr. Dave can correct any of the medical shit I got wrong.
