Getting a dog ... need some advice.

Seperation anxiety is seperation anxiety. Whether you're at work, grocery store, etc. Seperation anxiety leads to destruction of everything. Couch, table, whatever. I know dobies are very loyal, and want to be right next to you all the time. I'd have to think this causes problems anytime you leave the house.

Take it with a grain of salt, I've been fostering dobies for 5 years now and I've yet to run into it. Not to say it doesn't happen but I've not had it happen. In my opinion, how a dog is (or isn't trained) will also lead to how it acts when separated from it's owner. Each of the dobies I've fostered have been trained very well or I was constantly working on training with them. Yeah I had a few times where one had gotten into the trash but that was partially my fault for not putting it away like I'm supposed to. But I've yet to come home to a destroyed apartment.

That's all depends on where you get the dog from and what you consider expensive.

700 bucks for a DOG is expensive.

Personally I would rather pay 350.00 and let the cost of cropping come up later.

At the time, I didn't have the money to put up front, but in the end because I definately wanted her ears to stand it probably cost more than 700.00 for dog and cropping.

My Dobe's ears stand.
Nothing worse than a dobe with pooly done ears, it would be better in my opinion to not get them cut if your not willing to deal with the care of the ears for a few months after the surgery.
To me it's like neglect, why do it if you aren't going to make it right.

I am not sure I would say that is breed specific. Prolly similar for any new pup in a new home alone.

I had the ears cropped at 5 months FWIW.

that aint expensive.......... There are lots of breeds that go for well over $1000

Wow, where'd you get the dog for it to cost you $700? We only ask for an adoption donation $300 for an adult with cropped ears and $225 with natural ears. We ask $350 for puppies and we typically crop the puppies ears. I agree with you, I hate seeing dogs come in with poorly cropped ears. Typically shows neglect on the owners part.

I've experienced some of the whining when being in a crate but I wouldn't say that's 100% separation anxiety and that typically didn't last past the first week or two. It's going to take most dogs some time to adjust to a new owner and new place, especially if they've never been in a crate.

Brent I'm not saying you're insinuating, it's very possible that they could have separation anxiety and I just have been lucky to not have to deal with it.

You must have a good vet to cut the ears cheap.

While Adobption is noble as shit, I know me and how I am, I am not ready to deal with certain things, for me it was best to go after a puppy. I tried adopting a dog once, you couldn't raise your voice to it with out making the issue worse...nothing like turning and seeing the dog hike it's leg on your couch, to only be done marking by the time you can yell NOOOOOOO, only to make the pissing start up again.

Accidents are one thing, (I know when they are my fault too) but dogs trying to mark territory in the house and generally using my house as a toilet...not ok with me.

When I was looking at pups I saw them from 700.00 to 1200.00 with cropped ears. I found mine from a couple of necks that met me outside of tyler and didn't want me coming to thier house to see the parents. They brought all the puppies to me.

FWIW:
I was a fan of blue(they have hair problems). Now I would suggest getting black and rust.

Interesting to read about the boxer mixes in this thread.
I know boxers are energetic as hell. I always liked them but never wanted to deal with one on a daily basis until I picked up a boxer weimeraner mix from a family that couldn't handle him at 5months old. The breeders call it a fuggin "bo-weimer". He ended up being a lean 60lbs and he can be as wild as needed and athletic (can jump over 6' straight up from sitting) or calm down and lay with you when it is time. He was stubborn as hell at first, but now he is trained on either voice or hand signals for all commands, unbelievably loyal and a hell of a watch dog. In fact, the only time he barks is when something/one new comes in range.
I do have to watch out for things myself though. I was in the driveway one day when a stranger on the sidewalk walked up behind my daughter without anyone but the dog noticing. He went batshit nuts and circled their feet jumping and growling and nipping at ankles. It has happened twice with intruders/strangers but he has never bit, for what its worth.

My brother's kid's dog was killed by the police in his back yard for this very thing. It was his kid's 6th birthday (I think) and we were all in his back yard having a party on a Saturday. There were at least 10 kids there. One of the neighbors that doesnt like my brother called the police and complained about the noise the kids were making and the kids music. Long story short, the cops came by and knocked on the door and nobody answered because we were all in the back yard. They then walked through the garage through the back door into the back yard. My brother's son was right there with his back to the door. The dog saw these strangers in his yard near his buddy and charged them. The cop shot the dog dead right there in front of everyone. It's an understatement to say that my brother was pissed off. Nothing happened to the pig that shot the dog either.

Sorry to get off topic...

My recommendation is a lab or lab mix. Our dog is a lab/chow mix and he is VERY protective of my boys. He sleeps at the foot of their bed every night.

No doubt. My cousin's is a big lazy baby most of the time, but when he gets up and runs and barks people notice. lol

This would have raised a red flag to me. Just seems odd, like puppy mill kinda shit.
