I know you live on a farm or something equivalent but in the city where houses are built relatively close to each other with kids playing around, that may be hard to grasp for you.

What's hard to grasp is how you think a granny is going to be able to fend off a charging dog with a freaking stick while trying to protect her grandchild and deal with the dog she is walking freaking out on its leash that she won't think to let go of because of the charging dog. This is not a situation in which she can do as you suggest.

And I've got no clue as to what this "city" thing is that you speak of. Really, houses are built close together and people actually walk around carrying sticks? Wow! I must put seeing this on my bucket list!!!!

I almost always carry when I walk my dog

If your dog is vicious and on the loose you have no one to blame but yourself when it gets shot.

I'm over by the fence so I bang on it to get my dogs attention (i was on the outside, she(my half collie half aussie) was on the inside) but nothin..
By this time the dog is about 10 feet from me I don't know what his deal is or why he is so bent out of shape, so I yell "GO HOME" and point the opposite way and stare him in the eyes.. He slows a bit, until he stops about 6 feet from me and keeps the yapping.

I usually have my grand-pappy's old pocket knife on me, so I took it out in case this dog had rabies or some shit and it was going to try and bite me.

After yelling at it some more my neighbors kids came out to see what was happening, and about that time I guess the owner did too, because I heard a whistle and the dog started to slowly head the other way....

I couldnt believe that dog was someones in my neighborhood or what all the foam was about.. anyway I did yell "I almost stabbed your dog" as I was putting my knife back up. Cool story bro.
I picture that little dog in your avatar telling me that story as I read it. I bet that poor little guy was scared.

BTW to the OP, if your dog won't defend your MIL and kids if another dog attacks, that dog ain't worth having.

I know it is hard for you to grasp reading comprehension but I said your AVERAGE JOE. I am sure if you pick someone who HAS a CHL like a woman who doesn't shoot a lot I am sure they wouldn't be as successful as you think they may.

Hehe, bringing a knife to a dog fight.

lol... She can't let go of a leash of a freaking out dog but you want this woman to fire a gun into the street and try hitting a dog? Sure!

I know this next part may be a bit hard as it involves logic, but why not do soemthing that involves fixing the situation like involving animal control or the police? It is obvious everyone is afraid of the "what ifs". Instead of roaming the streets like an inferior asshat why not fix the problem before it evolves into something worse?

And I was making it painfully obvious that, on this board, it's heralded to be better trained than the average joe, smart guy.

It's a difference between what is and what we are recommending. But you're still working on fantasy vs. reality, so maybe we should hold that off for another day.

I'm also willing to bet you've never shot at a moving target. Moving toward you is not all that difficult, especially at these ranges. Infact, it's the easiest of the movements to shoot at.

Quote me where I said for her to shoot it, or even implied it.

Poor Steve! He will NEVER get away from that shit as long as he's alive. He has a damn good point though. Just cross the street and eliminate any issue.

Maybe the guy is truly concerned that his dog might try to get out and is just trying to notify anyone/everyone possible?

Don't take everything you hear as a threat. Sometimes being forewarned is a good thing and it sounds like he is trying to do the responsible thing by letting you know that closing the distance to his fence could excite his dog.

Granted... if the dog got out he'd be 100% liable for any injuries or property damage caused by his dog... but it truly seems like he's trying to avoid any possible issues.
The problem is that if you know your dog has the propensity to escape and the ability to kill, you either take the necessary precautions or get rid of it. Stating "you have been warned" is definitely not the way to go about it..

That said, I would do as others have suggested and have your MIL find another route to walk the dog. Just because you are within your rights to kill said dog, you never know how it's going to go down. Why tempt fate.

If they guy said that to me I would tell him that your warning is worthless and even if I no longer walk my dog here, are you going to be out here 24/7 to make sure nobody else does either? The idea of warning people is asinine and, IMO, only ensures your liability should the dog do some damage.

Shit, you can buy the chain-link fence panels at any home improvement store to create a kennel / run that could keep any dog secured. How fucking hard is that? II don't understand why that guy would put himself at risk for liability like that. Just a dumbass I guess.

                            You are correct sir!

Though running away isn't much harder. The hard part of that is hitting them in the legs enough to make them turn around and get shot in the chest...

Like I said an expert marksmen. Why don't you add the freaking out dog ont he leash like Mike was referring to, a kid and your blood pressure rising as this dog is chasing towards you, then try and hit that easy target.

I know this is easy for your since you are a Navy Seals sniper but an average person with basic training doesn't make them 100% accurate.
