Tech - Yeah, it's great now but a lot of these innovations are NOT US based. Even the ones that are, the manufacturing jobs are not here. Hell, in a lot of the situations I see - the innovations maybe in the US from foreign educated people. Or people who are foreign and educated in the states.
Don't misunderstand what I'm saying. I have very little hard proof but I am in the industry and these are my observations. Just because we're using the technology does not mean Americans created it. To me, an American based company does not mean Americans are leading the way once you peel back the layers.
Education - Again, this is one of those things that in my eyes is more then just schools. I think "education" is 60% parents, 40% schools. Parents teach everything a kid should know to be a decent person. Schools systems teach all the book smarts, and then the social aspects of schools trying to booger up a portion of what the parents are trying to teach. It is just my observation that parenting may need some work. Sometimes it is ghetto parenting, maybe parents working too much (to the one poster, I was poor too in WV with a single parent - but she still made sure I had some common sense), maybe just too young...etc...etc.
Then again, the schools should be allowed more discipline. In my schools it may have been 24 hours later, but if a guardian approved of paddling - there was a meeting and you got paddled. In our town, nobody ever said no. I think parents just showed up to gauge how much more of a whooping you should get at home.
Civil Rights - some arguments could be made that NOTHING is equal yet. There are favorites, racism and so on. Resentment maybe building and so on. Then again, you're probably more right then wrong on this one all day long. The reality is - if you behave decently you get treated decently. It's proven over and over again.
Health - Modern medicine, like technology is excelling for sure. (US Based?)
Crime - I don't want to touch this one.
