"Nothing is static. Even the Mona Lisa is falling apart." You can adapt to change or you can complain about it. The youth of today have a different set of circumstances and truths than we did. Maybe they aren't learning the same thing we did. We didn't learn the same things our fathers did. As the world advances, so does the necessity of our knowledge base, and what is concentrated on in a learning environment. I doubt public schools are any worse now than the open classroom experimental bullshit that went on in the 80s. Talk about the invention of ADD..

Right. Our simulator has many various airplanes and helicopters (even the space shuttle) and terrains in the rpogram. The joystick looks like the ones I see in the military helicopters I've flown in and the instrument cluster has all the necessary gauges. I'm not sure how "real" it is, but it definately takes an advanced level of awareness to fly the aircraft efficiently. Each one handles differently and adjustments in each scenario is necessary. My son seems to take to it very well. I can see how that can at least mean kids can be trainable through these games.

Or sit in a Bradley, m1, Stryker, LAV, etc...they're all video feet and very much system reliant.

Slippery slope on this one in my opinion. I think it is also agreeable with homes either having poor parents, or requiring two working parents that kids are not getting the parenting that used to be available. Just that mindless talking with kids throughout the day that teaches them a bunch of things.

Both parents work all day, get their kids from day care, and a few hours later...bed time. Nobody is going to parent a kid like their real mother or father.

Granted, teaching may have something to be desired as well.

I have a hard time believing this because the "rebel" flag has almost been removed from school.

And "that" generation will have screw ups as well as succesful people. Laborers are the people that think just because something is more physically difficult, it contains higher value.
I could see them mistaking the union jack and the rebel flag, but they see Texas flags everywhere!

It's alot clearer than that in my eyes. Maybe because I attribute my success to teachers as well. But if a kid is not taught what he needs to know in regards to academia, I see that as a failure if the teacher.

I was raised in a poorer home, with 2 working parents tryin to make ends meet. Somehow i am "ahead" of most of my friends raised by a full time mom with more money.

You keep showing your lack of diversity and understanding. Come to work with me and meet some friends. Well open your eyes a little. On the flip side alot of the old guys can't run the software or program as well. As was mentioned before, you gotta adapt.

I have operated a mill, lathe, welded, and much more. But it's way easier to generate some code and click go. I do agree that it takes both the young and the old to run a successful program. But why do I need to know any of that when I can design my parts and order them from a slew of approved suppliers without overpaying some old guy to bitch about kids.

There are certainly bad teachers, as with any profession. But it's more of a failure of the system than the teachers. Standardized tests are bullshit and it's all they teach anymore.
