None of us were there to validate that claim. It isn't worse. It is just different. Different times bring different societal demands. There was plenty of backlash in the 50s from the perception that the world was perfect, and suburbia was the place to be. You can tell by the writing that was done. On the Road by Jack Kerouac and Revolutionary Road (possibly the greatest American Novel ever written) by Richard Yates spring to mind. Modern media glamorizes the 50s as a golden era of the American Dream, and perhaps it was. But every dream has its dark outer edges.

I wasn't offended by what you posted. What tweaked my melon was the condescending tone that RD had about laborers, but I'm not like most people in manufacturing, I have a brain. But I digress. I agree with you that todays kids are fucktards, but you'll always have the cream rise to the top so I haven't lost all hope for the next generation.

Since this thread got derailed a bit (expected) I will add my 2 cents. Now before I do, I want to mention that I didn't read this entire thread (brent shut up lol) but I think we are comparing apples to oranges here. One of the key factors in my opinion that makes these two completely opposites to compare is technology.

Do some of these things make us lazy? Sure. But as a society there are constantly new things that can be done with technology. These are quicker, more efficient and for the average Joe on a daily basis, simply more convenient. And to be honest, that is where every new great invention or idea stems from. Bigger, badder, better.

I mean, look at the phones that are out these days, you have GPS, credit card scanners, barcode scanners, books, games, internet. What took hours can be shortened dramatically.

And you seriously are gonna throw a bitch fit about being offended then call kids today fucktards? And i have heard that bullshit about engineers being so stupid because things take time...etc. One...most sustaining or facilities engineers are far from the cream of the crop. Those engineers are reserved for design.

If it makes you feel any better however, I always interface with my machine shops. I do understand there's a knowledge i do not, and will never have. I am not bashing skilled labor.

I blame the company partially for that problem though, they hire folks straight out of Penn State that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. To top it off they won't listen.

Another thing you're failing to admit is the failure of the teachers. You cannot hold someone accountable for not knowing what they aren't taught.

I'm not even going to get into that.

There are certainly bad teachers, as with any profession. But it's more of a failure of the system than the teachers. Standardized tests are bullshit and it's all they teach anymore.
