I have a KD above ground and it serves it purpose just fine. Its 4ft deep and we put down a few sheets of insulation on the ground with a heavy cloth mat to keep the bottom soft. It came with a pump and easy to keep clean with a haywood creeper and a float with a chlorine tab. Its small but kids never seemed to mind.

We have had an Intex for going on 3 years now. Last year I ditched that crap filter and spent money on a really good sand filter. Kids LOVE it an we have more than got our money out of it. I built a deck on it last summer when I did the filter change. It's a great party and hang out spot now.
With an above or an inground, just keep up with the maintenance and don't let it get out of hand.
