My bike is having a chain allergy. Broke one mid climb, then 2 hrs later broke its brand new replacement. Bike is laying in the garage in time out until it learns its lesson.

I may go in and slap it around a bit if i'm feeling froggy, but likely wont ride until tomorrow.

If you're normal height, build one out of used parts for about 500$ that will be a functional equivalent to a 1000$ bike.

If you're super tall? Check shops for smoking deals on last years models and get a 1000$ hardtail for 700$.

Full suspension for a beginner around here is a bit much. You won't learn a lot of the finesse aspects of bike handling that make all the difference in the world.

For what it's worth: All of the major manufacturers are similar in quality. Although I'm biased towards specialized because of their frame designs and their customer service.

If you want to throw away 500$, then go buy whatever entry level "mountain bike" a shop tries to sell you. You will replace every part on that thing within 6 months if you start riding trails a lot.

I started with a 3000 series trek, and within a year i'd bought a new one and gave the old one to a friend who wanted to get started. Like pete said, the durability is shit. I was constantly having to fix something and ended up spending more in that year maintainng/fixing than i did buying it.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat though...learned how to ride and fix the bike all at the same time. When it was time to upgrade, i knew exactly what i was looking for.
