The 6.4 is a beast. Wouldn't hesitate to buy a nice clean one with a good Oasis report
6.0 and 6.4 are pretty much at their max power, which is why usually so many problems when people mod them.
My dad bought an 03' 6.0 new, the thing was always at Ford, went through 2 or 3 turbo's, and some other stuff, finally put in a new motor. Still had problems when he sold it.
But like you said get one with a good report and do a couple things to get it fail safe and your good.
It's the problem one's (lemons) to stay away from. Once a problem, always a problem, like my dad's.2 Chronicles 7:14

plenty of people driving around with 300hp tunes on 6.4's with no problem. the 6.0 is maxed out.
the 7.3 is operating at half power of a 6.0 or 6.4, so that makes sense...

Ok, must've been just he 6.0's I heard about then, so I just decided to add the 6.4. haha
J/K You know a lot more about them than I do. I try my best retain info. when I talk to my diesel mechanic, but since I only own the 7.3 the 6.0 & 6.4 stuff must leak out.2 Chronicles 7:14

If they recover your truck God willing, get a Revelco anti-theft device.
They've been in business since 76' and not a single vehicle has been stolen with their device.
I do a couple walk arounds before I go to bed and either I or someone else must've scared off some thieves, cause one day I noticed under the door handle someone was starting to pry the door handle.
Now I have the Revelco and squeeze it in the garage. LOL
But now when I take it somewhere I know when I go in somewhere it will still be there when I come out.
Do some research on it, here's the link to Revelco's home page and the Authorized DFW guy.
Home page for the Ravelco anti theft device, anti theft device for cars, anti theft device for trucks, anti theft device for big rigs, anti theft device for heavy equipment. Not one vehicle ever stolen using the Ravelco Anti Theft Device!
