I recommend taking the Old Town Trolly Tour while y'all are out there. In a day's time, you can hit Seaside Village, The Gaslamp Dist, Old Town, Balboa Park, and Coronado Island in one swoop.
We hit the zoo and Coronado last time we went but I will def. check into the other stuff you mentioned. The trolly sounds fun...certainly for a five year old. Thanks for the info Jen.

We've been kicking around a couple of ideas. It'll be my wife and I and the two older children.

      1. Drive to Los Angeles and do Universal Studios, Hollywood, Griffith Observatory, Malibu beach, Santa Monica pier, etc. Having been to LA a lot and my deep hatred for that area, I'm not excited.....but I'd make the best of it.

      2. Drive to New York City. I can drive this in my sleep, but I'd like to be able to stop along the way and check out some civil war battlefields....plus, there is a fort at the base of the Verrazano Bridge that I've passed a million times and would really like to check out.

      3. (This is the most likely) Moab, UT! Off-roading, hiking, camping, mountain biking, beautiful scenery, white water rafting.....all with the comforts of home nearby.

When my ex took me out to SD for the first time, his parents gave us tickets for my Christmas present. We started at 8am and finished up around 3pm. You get a sticker, so you can spend more time at one stop and grab the next Trolley, or you can skip the stops that don't interest you.
It would be great for a 5 year old's attention span.

It looks like they've added several more stops, and have packages for some of the more popular attractions.

I am about 3 miles from SDSU. I've heard that Legoland is great for the kids, it's a quick drive up the 5, and of course there's Sea World. Balboa Park would be great for the wife and yourself, it's a beautiful area, but it's alot of walking so not at all kid friendly. The tour of the bay is scenic and relaxing, but again, not much fun for a 5 year old. Mt. Helix is a beautiful place to take a picnic lunch, it's an old out door theatre on top of one of the "mountains" just to the east of San Diego. Great view of the city, and you can see clear to Mexico.

Legoland is pretty cool. Did that in Jan. We spent the day in Balboa Park in Jan. We started at the Aerospace Museum and ended at the Zoo. We took in the Science Museum as well as the model train museum. Balboa Park is very cool with lots to do.
