  • Cool tools you have or have gotten as gifts?

Around this time of year my wife always starts asking me for Christmas and birthday ideas to pass on to the family....I always like to get tools, but already have a lot of shit, just wondering what some of you guys might have bought for yourself and/or received as a gift that turned out to be pretty cool.....or maybe something unique.

    I'll start off...

Rotozip - Probably something I would have never bought for myself, but turns out I've used the crap out of this thing. Great for any kind of cutting in drywall work, working edges, etc. My bro gave it to me a few years back...

My Pop got me a set of assorted tips for my air hammer a while back, and there was one particular in the set, a sheet metal trimmer, that came with them....this thing is just awesome! If you do any metal work, this thing on the end of a good air hammer will cut cleaner and a lot faster than your typical pneumatic cutting tools. Really handy if you are needing to cut clean somewhere but without the sparks from a cutoff/wizzer wheel, like inside of a car (floor work)...

I also use it for larger jobs too....like removing the larger chunks of the quarter panels on my Chevelle recently. Notice how clean it cuts, and literally probably 10% of the time it would have required with a cutoff wheel or air saw

This one I bought for myself quite a while back, but ended up using it so much I've about wore it out. Battery powered 3/8 Impact. After I bought it I realized just how much I had taken for granted what a PITA dealing with an air hose can be, and also how friggin loud my pneumatic 3/8 impact is. These are great for just about all kinds of general work, and especially around cars....just make sure to get a good brand name and at least 14.4v, and you'll have plenty of torque to do most 3/8 jobs you come across. I've been looking at new ones and thought I would step up to an 18v this time, but they all seem to be pretty bulky over the 14.4v models....so if size is an issue for you, something to keep in mind. I suppose one of these would be great for guys that don't have access to an air compressor too.

cordless impacts are the shit!!!!! I got my first one about 5-6yrs ago when I was working for Siemens. The day I busted it out, all the other guys on my team were like "holy shit, WTF is THAT!?!?!?" within weeks they all had one...

I then got a position where I worked with multiple teams, and every team I went to started buying them. It got to the point where Siemens provided two of them per gang-box on that project! LOL

anyhow, if you're looking for a cool stocking stuffer for a mechanically minded person, get them a little IR/laser temperature gun. You can get an inexpensive one for about $70-75 or so. I got one when I was working on compressors, and I found myself using it so much outside of work, that when I left that job, I went and bought me another.

It's great for setting tire pressure on trucks, finding energy leaks/gaps in houses, diagnosing misfires in vehicles, etc. etc. all sorts of stuff

I like the idea of a functional battery operated impact, so that's good to know.

One of my batteries are shot, but the impact works great. And it's 1/2".

Power is good, and the price was right (it was a gift). If I were a professional mechanic, I think I would have shelled out some more scratch. But for me, it works.

I prefer Makita usually, but I cannot justify the extra expense for as little as I use it.

It may go without saying, but I've always loved my dremel tool.

Yesterday my grandma told that he would have wanted me to have all of this, so my dad and both of his brothers helped me load all of it and told me to put all of it to good use.

This is him living on with me in my garage.

I have been wanting a good cordless impact for a while now. I have grown to hate cordless tools though. I have gone through so many cordless drills in the past 3 years that its crazy. The drills last but the batteries keep going bad!

I have been meaning to buy a set of ratcheting wrenches for a while though. Those things are worth their weight in gold!

I use this sander like crazy for all my wood working stuff. I like to find out junk and refinish it and add/subtract things to it for my own purposes. Old head boards, tables and whatever. This thing saved me a lot of hand sanding. Hand does go numb after a using for 30+ minutes after a few hours you're shot. Still better then mass hand sanding.

LOL guilty. I got the 12 pack or something though.

I walk around sears sometimes just looking for deals. The craftsman club thing gets some good deals.

They had a 3ton craftsman jack for 49.99 the other day.
