  • size of hail to do roof damage?

Typically what size will yield enough roof damage on a composition roof to warrant a claim? We had quarter size hail 3 nights ago, and then again last night. Only slight dents on the tahoe, but wondering if I should call the roof in to get looked at. Those who have had roof claims, what size hail did you get that caused the claim/damage?

it isn't the size of the hail, but the amount and the force. You can have a roofer come look at it for free

Ok so sporatic for 5-10 minutes probably didnt do much then. Every roofer I have called out said I needed a new one (no shocker there) so I quit calling them out

How many grains from the roof do you find around the drip line?

I cleaned out my gutters and had to use a small shovel to remove all of the grains of asphalt

There's no "typical" size. It depends on the force in which it was driven into your roof / property, and how much was driven by said wind/rain

There was a hail storm right before I bought my house two years ago, so the previous owners insurance paid to have it replaced before the papers were signed. Well my housing inspector came over before the roofers got started, and I followed him around during the inspection. I got on the roof with him and he was pointing at dozens of places saying "yep, damage there, and there, a there....", but I couldn't see damn thing wrong. I wasn't going to argue though seeing as how the previous owner's ins was paying for the replacement.

I guess my point is they seem to replace it for extremely minor damage. Which I guess if you are an insurance company kind of makes sense when you consider the roof is protecting EVERYTHING else, structure and belongings.

I guess the best thing to do is call your insurance and have them come check it out. That's what you pay them for.
