No, not really. I've been in your shoes. I've done it before. The situation is pretty much the same. I had rent, a child, child care, a child that was constantly in the ER, and all the associated costs with it. I didn't get a dime in child support either. You can say it's different all you want. I was making jack shit when Kenny was born. But I made do. It was difficult, but I did it.

I'm not chastizing you at all. I'm just saying if you've been looking that long, and aren't getting anywhere, your expectations are too high. If I lost my job tomorrow, and couldn't find anything else, I'd be flipping burgers if that's what it took to support my family.

I've taken jobs for less than I'm worth, and so has damn near everyone I know. The job market is tough right now. It's temporary. What you think you're worth, and what a potential employer thinks you're worth, are usually very different.

I guess I should just up and quit right now, sit at home on unemployment, then eventually welfare, because I'm worth more than what I make currently. THAT, my friend, is terrible advice.

No my advice to her is to not take a bs position immediately just to prove she is "hungry". Use your unemploment time to really focus on a job hunt until you actually have the possibility of running out. Trust me, me and my gf just went through this and she almost took a job for 12K a year less. Thank god she listened...

That's fine and dandy, but she needs medical insurance.

I'm just of the old school train of thought that something is better than nothing. I'd take a job making less, knowing that I'm still looking and can leave at any time to take a better offer if/when it comes along.

BTW.. I don't disagree with your points Brent, I was only arguing semantics before. I had to do the same thing you are advocating. I looked for about 5 months but severance was running out and I had to take a job at a significant pay cut.

I think were both debating opposite extremes here. Most burger places and low paying jobs won't pay insurance anyways. And there are also jobs that can hurt your career. I agree on ok school versus new school.

don't waste money on resume writers, they are all out to get your $$. I work in a field where most people make 6 figures and after seeing many of my laid off colleagues pay upwards of $1k for resume writers, I noticed all their resumes looked the same. I opted to look at 5 resumes in my industry (my level) and use parts of them for mine. I am back in a 6 fig job and some of those guys are still looking. I have had 4 offers in 5 months due to my resume. You seem like a smart girl and have a path, keep pressing on and don't sell yourself short. PM me and I will give you my email address to send me your resume and I will make suggestions/critique, but ultimatley it comes down to how you act/speak during the initial call/contact. Also get endorsed on Linked In by people that hold high positions....it helps, beleive me. Good luck, being a single mom and trying to make a better life for you and your child is very commendable.

For those that PM'ed me my resume will be coming over in just a minute.

Brent let me paint a scenerio for you.

For example. I got a job offer for a Gasoline Environmental Compliance Specialist and it was in Downtown Dallas. The ended up offering me 19.00 an hour which is alot less than what i make now. Since i live in Ponder i would have to relocate and put my child in daycare in dowtown dallas due to the hours. They childcare would be 950.00 a month, rent for a two bedroom apartment would be the same. The cost of benefits would be 200.00 a month and you factor in bills and car payment well then i would have to live on food stamps to eat. I dont have the luxery of having family that can pick my child up from daycare so whatever job i take i have to live very close and have childcare very close.

My company is giving me five months severence and i have quite a bit in 401k, that i have the luxery of taking my time and not finding a job I'm going to end up quiting because i cant afford to work there. Not to mention i will have cobra and unemployment rolling in. You had family that was able to help you during that time. My family all lives nowhere close to dallas or Fort Worth where I'm finding all the jobs are located at. Understand now?
                          See you later...
