The lake is absolutely goregeous, and by far, the most clear water I've found in Texas.
This, the wife and I stayed at the Lodge at Turkey Cove. Nice for what it was and cheap. Close to Gruene Hall, New Braunfels and San Antonio.

Next time I camp down that way, we'll do more of the sightseeing stuff. We just had so much fun on the lake, we didn't want to get away.

I went there a couple of times in the early-mid 90's, but have heard that it's gone to shit.

Lake Murray in Oklahoma is really nice too. I would second Canyon Lake because it really is awesome out there, but Lake Murray is about half the distance from DFW, and is just as nice.

Sorry to correct you, but do you mean Ouachita. My grandma lives not far away. The Ouachita National Forest is beautiful. My aunt had a place there before she died.

Enchanted Rock and Canyon Lake are high up there. Pretty much anything in the Hill Country gets my vote.

I went up there a few summers ago and it is absolutely beautiful, but damn it was hot and humid.

Wife has a time share in Canyon Lake and we have never even stayed there. We have always traded it for everywhere else but Galveston mostly. After reading all the good reviews we may have to actually go down and stay there. Hell she gets bonus free time all year however with her being back in school it kind of limits our free time.
