Does filing an extension throw any red flags to the IRS?

I've never had to file an extension in the past. Now I've procrastinated a little bit too long and now I have to work all day today. So I won't be able to do them as planned.

No. Provided you don't owe anything.

You are not required to file your taxes before april 15th. If you file an extension, you're guaranteeing that you owe them or vice versa whatever number they come up with.

April 15th is the deadline that as long as you file before, the IRS does not have to pay you interest on your tax dollars that they've been holding. Get a better accountant.
