If you are recoil conscious...yes, but not as flat shooting as this one or as long range.

I already have .300 and .338 Win mags... this is a new toy for longer, flatter shooting that isn't only good for bench shooting due to excess weight...

There is flatter shooting rounds out there that have less wind deflection as well all while using less powder.

7mm STW will edge it in everything but energy but it is well respectable there as well with the 180 Berger VLD.A 7mm Ultra mag gets another 50fps over the STW but at the cost of 10grs more powder still 10 less than what the 30-378 needs. Energy is will mean nothing if the bullet isn't within the vitals, there is a pretty well known hunter/guide from Montana that longer range hunts with a 260 and does exceptionally well.

The bullets in the loads you pictured are far from efficient for long range anything (looks like a Nosler Partition or some other sp) you will need the Bergers if you want to do anything at extreme long range which might give you fits since you're mag looks pretty cramped as it is.

I agree the 7mm STW is a great round, but I won't ever shoot anything less than 30 caliber at an elk. I also will push a heavier bullet farther with more energy....
Bergers are much more efficient, these loads came with the rifle. I will be trying different combos with it, but for hunting bullet construction is critical also...

I guess this should be more in line as a "precision/target/hunting" rifle...

Do you think elk are that tough why 30? My grandfather used a 244 Remington (6mm Remington) and had no issues on elk and that was with a crappy 90gr cup and core bullet.

depends on the distance...elk are much harder to get close to now, especially on public land hunts. Elk hunts now days cost a lot so I don't skimp on the rifle/cartridge combo. The 30 holds energy out to the farther distances...with the "excess" powder this gives the 1000 lbs of energy (considered needed for a clean kill) out to a greater distance.

For fucks sake let him shoot what he wants. It's not like he's shooting an underpowered cartridge. If he can make ethical shots on whatever he's shooting, than it should not really matter.

I've never hunted anything larger than deer, and have always used my matched rifles, and now use the blackout bolt gun I bought for hunting varmint/hogs.

If I did get a rifle just for hunting I'd get something in 7 SAUM. I just really like short actions and shooting long range.

Any suggestion on a rifle to start some long distance shots? Remington 700?

SAUM is a nice round but is better suited in a long action with the high BC stuff. I wouldn't mind building one if I knew there would be s for sure supply of brass.

If you are just starting out its hard to beat 223 or 308 in your pick of an maker. I prefer 700's, Tikka and Winchester/FN over the others. A lot of people like and shoot Savage as well.

It all depends on you budget.

This is a hard deal to beat

Great action, great barrel, great rifle.

This is another great deal on a rifle $825

On top of that you'll need a scope. Buying a Gen 1 HDMR for is pretty hard to beat. Great Reticle, and they track very well.

My bolt gun went down during a stage at the TPRC match yesterday. Bolt stop sheered in 1/2. Nothing we could not fix in a hurry!

Pierce is already sending me a new part, but I made a temp fix in the mean time. Mine is one of the early actions, and they have since made some improvements to it.
